Which stock heads are good?
The cam went bad in my wife's truck. I'm just going to rebuild the whole engine. It' a 350. The heads on it now are 333882 casting. Are these heads decent for mild performance? Is there better castings I should start looking for? NO, I'm not going aftermarket or Vortec. Stock mild performance, that's all. Any input will be appreciated.

I think the 882's are (333882.....74-80...350/400......76cc chambers) this is off of Mortec.com. These are smog heads in the fact that the cc's are high, thus lowering compression. I have a set of Double hump 041's I think and they are the best stock head out there and they have the 64cc chambers that help to increase compression (with the exception of the Vortecs) If you are deadset on using those heads, be prepared to buy a pop-up piston to help pick up compression, you are looking for 9-9.5:1 and right now you are closer to 7.5-8:1. You can run 9-9.5:1 on pump gas with no headaches. Good Luck, PM me if you have any questions.

That 882 head is worth rebuilding. I have a set redone I'm getting ready to put on my 68. You can shave as much as .20 but I had just .10 taken off mine to help raise the compression a tad. The ones I see to stay away from are the 624's. They are light weight and crack easily. I'm replacing 624's on my 68's motor. I've got several motors I've acquired and numerous friends who had 624's with water in the oil. One motor rebuilding shop told me in Tulsa that wouldn't even take 624's as cores they were that bad. The 882 was written in car craft as saying it was the best of the worst. meaning the 70's smog heads are bad and this was the best of them, the 882's had some metal to them. run them.
Flat top pistons, mild cam say a 268 comp or similar, dual plane intake, you 'll be suprised how good that econmy motor will run. |

I heard the same thing; 882's are the best of the worst. If you do run those and want to increase your compression you could go with a thinner head gasket. Fel-Pro's got one that's like .015 inches compressed. That's what I used on my rebuild with stock heads.

i ported and polished a set of 882s and had flat top pistons it ran very good i would do it again

For mild performance any head will do.I wouldn`t go out and but anything if yours aren`t cracked or warped too much to plane.BTW,planing will raise your compression.

I've had and seen 882's crack~~. Before I would put good $$ into 882's, I would seriously consider a set of Vortec heads. Think this thing through a bit, for the price, a good set of Vortec's heads will boost your hourspower and torque better then most early design heads. If you are going to spend the $$ anyway----for a few $$ more, you get a WHOLE LOT MORE performance with reliable design, better breathing etc. My .02

Before I Spend Any Money Or Labor On Any Heads Or Blocks I Have Them Hot Tanked & Magnifluxed (checked For Cracks). If I'm Going To Bore Alot (like .100) I Get Them Sonic Tested To Find Out The Cyl. Wall Thickness. 882 Heads Are Fine For What You Want To Do. John

I thought 186 heads were favorites. They are double humps with accesory holes, 1969 |

go with the 882's, but they are prone to cracking like most chevy truck heads. the 041, 441, vortec, and there are a few others good for mild performance, but the 882 can be used temporarily. i put a set of rebuilt 882s on my 83 k5, but just to sell it. they ran good for the two weeks i had them on there before i sold it. lol!

The 882s were made in a heavy and a thin casting. GM went to the thin castings in 1976, I think.
My 74 L82 had them. I have no problem at all using the heavy castings. Virgil |
