cab and radiator mounts
How difficult of a job is replacing the cab and radiator mounts on a 72 gmc short bed 4wd pickup? I just received the kit in the mail from chevyduty. I have no idea how involved the process is or where to start. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: cab and radiator mounts
Very easy (assuming the bolts come loose).
1. Loosen all hardware really well. 2. Block truck as raising the cab with a jack will knock the linkage out of park. Probably do #2 first. 3. Remove and replace each mount one at a time. 4. Don't tighten all the way up until all the hardware is engaged.

Re: cab and radiator mounts
pretty much as above, do one side at a time, use lots of WD-40 or something like it.
Soak those bolts for a couple of days block the wheels, and get a wide board and make a slot, not too deep in the middle. So you can put it under the rocker panel and it won't crush it or slide then jack that side up. You dont have to jack it up too much.just enough to slide the mounts between. DO NOT put your fingers or anything else between the cab and frame! I haven't but a buddy did |

Re: cab and radiator mounts
Just hope that the Previous Owner didn't weld the bolts in... I wanted to replace my rubber cab bushings when I first got the truck and found out it wasn't going to happen. So I've decided to wait until I'm ready to remove the cab completely to paint the truck to replace 'em...

Re: cab and radiator mounts
i just replaced my cab bushings....i cut the nuts off and replaced everything. I jacked the cab up by placing a few 2x8's under the outriggers this worked well I was able to spread the load out. Don't be suprised if you find some rot in the cab to frame mounts. I found some right where the bushings sit on these brackets. fortunately there was no rot where they connected to the frame so I reinforced them with some steel. The bolts in the front are accessible, but you have to pull the rug up. The rear cab bolts are under the gas tank. Since I was also replacing floor pans at the time i had everything out of the interior of the cab. I had to remove the gas tank in order to get to the rear bolts. this was my first time at replacing floor pans and cab bushings. It went ptretty smooth. good luck

Re: cab and radiator mounts
When you replace the front mounts under the radiator do you have to remove the radiator and crossmember or what?

Re: cab and radiator mounts
lots of pictures of this process - use the search feature on this forum and search for "mounts". you should find a few threads, some with pics. i lifted off my cab today and i'm replacing the mounts once i'm done w/my other work. the fun part is removing the front two

Re: cab and radiator mounts
ONE MORE IMPORTANT NOTE:
remove the ground strap that goes from the front passenger side cab mount up to the body. Don't ask me how I know to do this (hint: i'll be buying a new ground strap soon )
