rear-end questions

Ok i have a GM82 coded rear end. I found out the GM8 means 2.56 gears but i am wondering what the 2 means? Does this mean i have a 2 series carrier? Is it possible to put 3.73 gears in my rear-end or do i need a new carrier? It is a 12 bolt.
thanks

Re: rear-end questions

the 8.5 posi units are very universal but unfortunately2.73 is the cut off point. 2.56 and lower(yes they made worse) is unit in itself but i guess a spacer is an option but i sure dont like em. DAVE
