Re: Talk about a nice dash bezel!!!

Javy,
looks like we need to get together. if this is all cnc routing work, i have a design or two that i'd like to send your way, if you'd consider doing one custom. I can provide you with drawings in .dwg, .dxf, .dgn, or whatever. I can also give you a digital 3d model, if you like.

i don't mean to get you into the business of one-offs, but i'm VERY confident that there isn't anything out there like what i need. let me know if you're able or interested, and if not, no big deal.

thanks
- c

This post is over two years old, not sure if any of the people involved still hop on the forum.

Re: Talk about a nice dash bezel!!!

Thanks for getting back to me. attached is a model (in progress) i produced and is what i'd like to try. my dimensions and sizes are not correct yet, as i haven't measured my dash to verify, so some of the propotions may be a little off. also, i'm not yet certain of the size of lcd screen i will be able to use, so that dimension isn't accurate, either. gauges will probably be Haneline. i'm more curious about whether you would consider doing it. the touch screen will actually be tied to a small computer in the glove box running GPS, Radio, Satellite radio, MP3, DVDs, and a bunch of other stuff. i'd also have a few switches on the left to run power windows, doors, etc. very custom, i know, but thought i'd give it a try.

anyway, here goes. what do you think?

thanks!

Re: Talk about a nice dash bezel!!!

that is quite an incredible dash, but i see a huge issue with it. you can't use it safely while moving - imagine sticking your hand inside the steering wheel to touch the screen @ 55 mph on the interstate .... it ain't happening. to make matters worse, can you imagine trying to see your gauges at night in the pitch black out in the middle of nowhere with a TV screen sitting between them? People with bad night vision will have a heck of a time trying to work around that one, even with a dimmer (might require a separate dimmer - I suggest external knobs since it's not safe to touch the screen and you don't want people having to go into a menu to dim and brighten the screen every time.

It's a killer idea, but I see some impractical things that need to be addressed.

Re: Talk about a nice dash bezel!!!

yeah, went through those thoughts. the heart of the system is in the glove box, including a keyboard integrated into the glove box door and a larger touch screen monitor there, for the navigator/mobile office/fun gadget to show off. the screen in the dash probably will not be touch screen, and will only display GPS and radio/mp3 data (song titles, etc.) similar to factory systems, once the vehicle is in motion, it can't be messed with (except by the copilot from passenger seat.) also, there are dimmer controls/low brightness screen resolutions for nighttime use.

minimal controls for the driver will be integrated/reformatted/built into the original in-dash radio, so that it looks stock but will still control volume, display, tuning/song cycle, etc.

i've been doing quite a bit of research on another forum, mp3car.com, and i think i've got it mostly worked out. the problem has been one of integrating the "driver information screen" in a sleek way, while still maintaining a mostly factory appearance. seems lots of folks are doing this with good results, but i've yet to see anything done to a vehicle this old.

first things first, though. i need to get her running reliably and rewired...

Re: Talk about a nice dash bezel!!!

new thought:
could be a cool retro look to use an old color tv (crt) rather than flat panel screen. with the woodgrain and inset bezel frame, it reminds me of our old '72 console tv. or knight rider. but don't worry, i'm not going to try to control it with my wristwatch
