Dieseling
71 chevy 350 with a 1405 edelbrook starting to diesel a little bit. Is there a quick fix for this and if not will it get worse. Thanks

Try re-setting your timing. this will makem diesel. or you can shut it off in drive this also will not let it diesel but I would check the timing.

maje sure idle is at 600 or 650 and no higher, if you have an idle stop solenoid, then use it to set idle, if you can hook one up to the carb then do it, they are great for closing the throttle blades so far that the engine cant try to run on when hot and/or idling too fast

It sounds to me as though its a classic problem of after burn. As to the timing thing, since timing is in control of your ignition spark, when you shut it off, there is no spark, and there fore should be no problems due to timing. You may be burning a little rich, causing excessive carbon to build up on your piston and or combustion chamber and this also causes a hot condition during the combustion cycle, causing the carbon deposits/buildup to become very hot, causing pre-ignition/detonation, which will cause your engine to run after the ignition (and timing) cease to operate, therefore, creating venturi vacumn in your carb and continuing to draw fuel into the combustion chambers. Try playing with your mixture or like the one guy said, playing with your throttle plates. Or you may have a little buildup due to blow by on your rings, if the engine is old or was not broken in correctly. Just a young punks opinion...

Ignition timing and high idle is are the two most common reasons for run on, or dieseling. Some more reasons are carbon build up, and too low a grade fuel. Another one that is not so common, is sharp edges in the cc of the head. Anything that heats up your cc, can cause run on. Advanced timing reaises temps quite a bit. As does carbon build up. Do a tune up. Chck your idle RPMs, check your timing. Ensure that your vac advance, and your advance weights are working properly. If it is still doing this, then with the engine running at a high idle, take a spray bottle of water and spray a stream of water into the carb as it runs. Thie will bust the carbon loose and throw it out the pipes. Any one in Cali should be familiar with this procedure. Many smog stations will do this on a car that is borderline failing smog check. If you are still having problems, go to the next higher grade of fuel. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350.
