I have seen that step on alot of trucks, but I am not sure what the purpose of it was.

I have found it handy when the bed is full and there is no room to get in the bed to lift something out. You step on the step, grab what your lifting, like something long that you need another person to help on the other end by the tail gate, and just lift it up over the side of the bed.

This fall there was a 67 3/4 ton truck in the demolition derby. He had a step on the box. I wish I could have removed it before the truck was obliterated.

I also have one of those NOS. Not sure if I will ever install, but it is there if I decide to do it.

It was intrduced in the late 50's as a dealer add on. It is still around in some dealers (NOS) and the (original) part number is 988423 and comes with one step, mounting hardwear, and a template as to where to place it. They originally had a list price of 10 bucks.
