i got this new steering column and want to know what keeps it in gear if you see the pics you can see the difference there is no bracket to keep it in gear

Just hook the linkage up, it will work. That's the difference between a tilt and non-tilt column.

There is a metal piece with notches in it up at the top of the column (steering wheel end) that the shifter lever rides on. This piece keeps you from being able to shift out of "P" or out of "N" and "D" without pulling back on the shifter lever first.

And it is a MUCH better set up than the junk non tilt truck columns.

well that is what i thught so i put the handle in and i can go from p to l1 with out pulling on it im just worried about it poping out of gear

There's supposed to be a little spring in the column that pushes on the handle to make sure it is engaged with the notched metal piece. I'm guessing the column was shipped to you with the shifter handle removed. Maybe the spring fell out during shipping. It's possible that the spring fell inside the column. I had mine fall off inside the column and I had to disassemble the column to get it out.
