Frank, how hard would the overloads be to install do you think?

Also where do the air bags go? Inside the rear coils?

Wibilly, ya mine has hauled a load or two of those when we were living in MO. Burns nice in the wood stove.

Longhorn, if I had a set of those leafs I'd not be squatting either!!

rustbuckt, my Dad had a set of those spacer things on one of his pickups a long time ago. They seemed to work well then too.

Wouldnt it jut be easier to take the rocks out of the box? How long are you planning on leaving them in there that would make it worth while to redo your suspension? Not trying to be a smart ass, just wondering if you are going to haul heavy loads a lot...

I just bought a 79 4x4 for that exact reason,these ol 1/2 tons won't haul very much

I love the way these trucks ride though,they just don't have much spring in the back.

Ya, the rocks are out. The reason I ask about overloads and airbags is, this isn't the first time its carried a load like this and it won't be the last. I'd rather upgrade it to handle the occasional load like this though, than go out and buy a rig just to do that.

The spacers work pretty good since they raise the truck and kind of stiffen the springs. The ride isn't that bad though. When I got the truck those spacers were already there, I just took 'em out to see how far it would drop. It dropped a lot, and I probably got around 6" of lift when I put 'em back in. Here's a set of the factory 1960-1972 leaf overloads for coil rears on eBay.

Good old ebay! That set on there is missing the lower plates from the trailing arms. You know they are still on his truck. So you can't make them work.

They are pretty easy to install. The spring brackets bolt through the frame and the plates bolt to the factory U-bolts.

I have a set of variable rate HD springs for sale soon if you want them. I got them from LMC part # 34-2820. Worked real good when I was hauling stuff, now since I put in my new oak floor I not hauling anything larger than grocery bags!!! Just an option for you.

Yeah I saw the striker plates were gone, but I figure they would be easy to fabricate out of some 3/8" or maybe 7/16" steel plate. Just measure and cut 'em out with a torch, then drill the holes for the U bolts and there you go.

i think yhe factory helper springs would be a good way to go. you would still retain your ride quality and when loaded have the extra capacity to haul the load

From the picture I saw of your truck I don't know if I'd want to be hauling heavy rough loads in a truck that nice. I got a 67 and 68. I plan on making the 67 the more work truck. I thought of adding 3/4 ton springs on it all away around and taking some helper springs of a parts truck and installing them.
Real heavy loads I can just grab my old 77 3/4 ton. It's heavy and stiff.

davidh, I won't own a vehicle I won't work. You aren't the first to say that though. I was at the dump one time and a guy said, "thats an awful pretty truck to be working it like that". I thought thats why you have a truck.

Castiron9, Thats a sweet flatbed. Maybe someday I'll own one like that too. Would be good for hauling hay and the like.
