Outter Tie Rod Troubles! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am doing the front suspension over and I was unable to remove the outer tie rod on the drivers side. Passenger side came out easy, but the drivers side is frozen in the spindle. I finally cut the outer rod off, but now the hole where the tie rod connects to is filled with steel. I was able the drill about 1/4" hole through it but It ate all my drill bits up. Anyone have any suggestions on cleaning the rest of this out? Any special drill bit that will clean this out easily?

That hole it tapered, so don't drill it out too big!!!!

Get a hammer and a good punch, and try to drive it out from the bottom. The taper is bigger at the top, and smaller at the bottom, so it needs to be driver out of the top of the hole. Try to get a good purchase point on what is left of the stud and go to town with it!

Also, try soaking it with a good penetrating oil to help loosen things up.

Rattling on it with an air hammer would probably be the easiest IF you have one, if not the manual way glock suggested will work. You poor east coast guys, I feel for you!

Use some PB Blaster on it for a few days, then hit it with a torch if you can to heat it up

spray for a couple days then try a large c-clamp and a socket as a press to try pressing it out

or you can use a floor jack under it jacking so all yje weight of the frontend is on the threded end of the tierod and just keep spraying a couple or 3times a day and it should come loose in a few days

thanks......i have it wraped in a rag saturated with PB Blaster. I'll keep it saturated then go to war with it on Saturday! I'll keep you posted.
