reverse flow 350v8

a guy at the car show build this motor, a reverse flow engine, ck out were the carbs are and the exhaust, he says it runs but very loud

I'm confused!

So those are intakes sticking out the side, and those things in the middle of the pipes are carbs? That's exhaust coming out the top? I see the distributor on the front. That's kinda nuts.

With the sprint car guys sawing small blocks in half to make 4-bangers, this doesn't seem all that surprising.

Yeah, but they do it for a reason. They want a 4 cylinder with readily available aprts and a gazilion hours of knowledge aquired over the years making an SBC go fast.

I can't see any reason for this other than the satisfaction of saying you did it. Don't get me wrong, I ain't saying it was something simple to do. I'm getting a headache just trying to figure out how he got it turning backwards...

What makes you say it's an LT1? It does have a crank driven distrubitor, but it does not look like an LT1 set up.

Did you see it run?? The valves would be way wrong to run with the exhaust valves using them as intake valves. And visa versa
It does look like the cooling system runs from the original rear intake water passages.

In 1965 Jim Clark won the Indy 500 in a Lotus powered by a small block F**d which had been modified similarly. Weber carbs, IIRC, DOHC and a "bundle of snakes" coming out the top of the engine.

Looks like that may have been a marine engine? I know ZERO about boats, but my friend has one with one regular and one reverse rotation 350, which cool through the exhaust manifolds (with sea water). Everything runs backwards except the boat

Is the radiator in the back? looks like coolant enters through the water pump, and exits the intake (or is that now an exhaust manifold ) or vice versa. I just want my truck to be all one color. That would be crazy for me....

I don't think it's that hard to do. Time consuming yes. All you really have to do to make it run is revise the cam so the former intake lobes are timed for the correct exhaust timing and do the same to make the old exhaust lobes work for the intake events. The engine would still turn in the same direction. Getting a custom cam ground would be the trick. Use small valve (intake side) heads to start with and there is probably enough meat in the head to resize the old exhaust valve (now the intake) to a larger size than the "new" exhaust valve.

Cooling is just a matter of doing the plumbing as this guy did. Spark is another issue, but I think he could have used a regular distibutator, but the cap might need to be wired up differently if he changed from the conventional firing order (dictated by the cam). All, this guy used is a belt driven MSD distributator, probably done since he didn't use anything like the intake to bolt the distributator down too.

Like others have said, its not a new concept. Hot rodders have done this for years on Flathead fords or converting straight 6's with intake and exhaust ports on the same side to a Crossflow with intakes and exhaust ports on opposite sides.

By the way, that engine is definately not a LT1. The timing chain cover is different on LT1 (has a higher peak in the center for the cam-driven water pump).
