I agree that those prices probably aren't much higher than stick construction. Tink, You really don't need any special equipment for the trusses. The guy that put my garage up did the trusses with three other people helping him. Check on a garage package before you shell out the money. The price might actually surprise you. I don't think Lowes or Home Depot offer packages but you could ask. The buildings you listed look kinda like over-grown metal storage sheds. If they're as flimsy as the shed we had when I was growing up, it won't last long. http://apps.carterlumber.com/locate/....aspx?state=VA http://www.84lumber.com/stores/state...s.asp?state=va

Re: Garage Desperation - Opinons wanted...
I was thinking again this morning about this. How about a "pole construction" garage? I know they're less expensive than regular stick construction and should come in quite a few different sizes. You could even rough finish a dirt or gravel floor and pore it when the money is available. At least you'd have a dry place to work.
Also....check the site below. Click on the floor plan link at the top of the page....you can lay things out the way you'd want them. That way you can see just how much room you'll need. http://www.lesterbuildings.com/

Re: Garage Desperation - Opinons wanted...
Thank you, lux hauler!!! I just checked Carter Lumber and from their flyer today:
So, a wood garage is a very viable option! Now I can get the size I want and it will look much better and add more value to the property.

Re: Garage Desperation - Opinons wanted...
Friend gave me good advice when building a garage...
"Think about all the stuff you want in there, all the things you want to do in there. Then double it! You won't be sorry. You can never have enough garage space!!!"

Re: Garage Desperation - Opinons wanted...
A guy that bulids Garages/Shops once told me to get an Idea for the size of single car/truck shop you will need is to open both doors on your car/truck all the way. then measure from door to door, and six-eight feet to that measurement(three-four feet each side) This will give you plenty of working room on the sides, gives you room for Tool chests, equipment, cabinets ect. As for depth, measure the length of your car/truck and add ten feet to that measurement.(five feet front and back. again this is needed for good working room front and rear and add too storage.

Re: Garage Desperation - Opinons wanted...
Man, I'm soooo jealous. Our first house had two "sheds" out back on our 4 acres of land. One was 40x20 and the other was a single car garage. Great for storage and workshop.
Now I'm "in town" basically living on a postage stamp. And our "covenants" say no our buildings...not that I have the room for one. Good luck with your garage!!!

Re: Garage Desperation - Opinons wanted...
Thanks guys, I just need to do some measuring and find out county ordinances... I know you are required to be so many feet from the road and so many feet from your neighbor's property.

Tink, thanks for posting this. I've been considering a lot of options and now you have helped throw in another. There is an 84 lumber here. Gonna go pay em a visit.

Re: Garage Desperation - Opinons wanted...
My dad is putting up a pole barn type shop right now. To cut costs, he is not putting concrete down at this time. He went to the local electric company and got poles for $20 bucks I think. He cut each of them and half, so $10 for each "stud", and he said he is using bridge planks for around the bottom. Don't know where he got his trusses or the tin. I haven't seen the progress yet, but I'm going out there later today, so I'll take my camera and snap some shots for anyone who wants to take a look.
