I started with a screwdriver and hammer and went around taking out as much as I could without damaging the metal. Then I used a 4" knotted wire wheel on a die grinder to finish with.

A heat gun or hair dryer will make it easier by softening the material so you can dig most of it out without having to use a hammer... a little safer and you don't risk dinging the roof if you miss with the hammer...

I just did this last week. Mine was old and brittle and most of it came out useing a small gouge. After cleaning it all out I used sand paper to get down in the groove to get clean metal. I then primer sealed the rail before applying the new sealant. The sealant I used came in a tube for use in a chaulking gun. Once I got it spread evenly they said to wet a finger with plan water to smooth it out. Worked real nice, set it out in the sun and it dryed to a plyable smooth finish in a few hours.

Bring it out to Arizona in June and park it in the 110 degree heat and sun all day. Then scrape it out with a screw driver.

A note about re-applying the new. The body shop re-did my rain gutter before painting my truck and did a good job, but I went to put on chrome gutter trim, and they had filled too much for the trim to go on. Too late now!

I used 3-M's fast-n-firm in the tube. Works great. Lots of other areas on these trucks that use seam sealer too.

There's a seam sealer out there made by SEM. After you put it on it flows out smooth by itself. Cures fast as well.
