Stock temp. gauge question
I just got rid of the aftermarket temp. gauge (w/ numbers) and hooked up my stock gauge w/ the old sensor. When I had the numbered gauge running it usually showed between 190 and 200 at normal operating temp. Now where should that read on a stock non-numbered gauge? Mine is reading too high for my liking. Just trying to verify if my gauge is reading properly or not.

At 200 * it should show better then half way .

ok, thanks, I guess my gauge is hooped because I know what the usual operating temp should be w/ the 192 thermostat I'm running. Now, the big question..any way to reset the gauge so it will read roughly in that area (just over half) or do I have to go dig up another one?

Hey Al,
I think there was a topic posted a while back about this. It seems they all read differently. My 68's gauge reads just over the first line, when warmed up fully. The only time I've ever seen it go over any farther, was when I overheated the old engine...LOL I remember my friends old 72 reading about halfway at operating temp. And I've seen pics of others that vary between halfway, and towards the left hand side of the gauge....... I would say replace your sending unit first. I've had 2 different dash clusters in my truck, and both gauges have read the same. I would think any good parts house would have the sender. Best of luck TJ

Thanks TJ, Maybe the ones I have (got a couple laying around) are for just the idjit light, I DID inquire and was told there were 2 or 3 types around for that year.

I would also have to agree with 68stepside on this one. Both my trucks only read maybe an 1/8 of an inch over the first line when fully warm. Hope this helps.......Brian

Same here. When not doing anything too crazy my temp gauge looks like Bobbyk's temp gauge.

I guess I better do something, mine reads right up into the "H" area at normal operating temp. I KNOW its not overheating, got a fairly new rad (3 yrs), all new hoses (1 yr). Maybe I'll give it a flush anyway and replace the sensor. Thanks for the input folks!
