Distributor Worn???

Jjust by loosening hold down 3/4 turn, timing light is very erratic - does that indicate worn shaft or gear? I have never experienced this much play before while running an engine for timing adjustment. Is this normal amount of play in chevy block when loosened?
Thanks

Re: Distributor Worn???

Just so we understand,,, You loosen the hold down and that causes the light to freek out? That is what you're saying? I don't see how. 3/4 turn isn't even enough to allow the dizzy to ride up on the gears, or least I don't think so.

Anyway, here's a ttt for you.

Could be, and it wont do it when it is tightened down?If it still does it then more likely the timming chain.

Check this website on distributors. It may have the answer for you.

Re: Distributor Worn???

It's a quick check to pull it - there really shouldn't be any noticeable looseness in the shaft, and no more than (I think) .030 end play.

If the nut is loose enough that the distributor can move up and down then you're going to see timing chains - the gear is helical cut, so it wants to move.

My $.02

Re: Distributor Worn???

Thanks for the advice Billla. I'll check it out. Don't have a dial caliper, but can find someone to help measure. Great website Vettevet. And yes, it is fine once tightened down, but still shifts a bit until the very last tightening up. That's what surprised me. I will check for gear and shaft bearing wear next time I can get to the truck (3 weeks).

It could be as simple as the holddown bolt being stripped (?) I've always used the ARP stud vs. a bolt.

A feeler gauge will work just fine for end-play; it ain't an exact science
