Swap M21 for Saginaw
Can anybody out there confirm that an M21 will pretty much bolt in place for a Saginaw 3 speed? I seem to recall a couple threads saying this but couldn't find them.
Thanks, John |

Outside of some M-21 transmissions having fine spline input/output shafts, the swap should be an easy one. If your M-21 has the coarse splines you will be set except for the possibility of an adapter ring for the bell housing to fit the smaller bearing retainer on it.

I was unable to find one a few years ago, so I had a machinist friend make me one. He turned the I.D. to fit the bearing retainer with a press fit and then used the bearing retainer in the chuck to machine the ring concentric with it. I used washers on the retainer mounting bolts that would insure the ring would never come off.

Re: Swap M21 for Saginaw
Don't hold me to this but I think the 67 and earlier cast bellhousings have the smaller diameter retainer hole, that might be an option, assuming you want to hang the tranny like original. The cast housings have no threads n the bottom tranny mount holes, so you will need longer bolts with some nuts, use only grade 8 bolts and nuts here.
