Easy/Dumb question about heads
Okay, I'm pretty new to classic Chevy trucks, so please bare with me on this one.
'72 C20 402 BB - all factory original Which heads do I have - oval or rectangular port? Told you it was an easy one! I'm asking 'cause I'm heading to a huge swap meet ("Pate" for you local guys) tomorrow and thought I'd poke around for some headers and an intake for my truck.

Re: Easy/Dumb question about heads
I could be wrong about this, but I think the square ports only came on hi-performance engines, like Corvettes and Camaros with mechanical lifters. I've never heard of a rectangular port BB installed in a truck--an original one anyway.

Re: Easy/Dumb question about heads
I believe that's correct, oval ports were for "street" engines.
Woot, Pate! I'll be there, got a wad of dough burning a hole in my pocket! Last edited by mplex2000; 04-27-2006 at 02:47 PM. |

Re: Easy/Dumb question about heads
If it is orginal, they should be #241 oval port. Rectangle ports are found on the likes of 375hp 396, 425, 435hp 427's, 450hp 454. Don't nail me if I missed a couple, my memory is a little rusty.

Re: Easy/Dumb question about heads
Same question, but I have 70 GMC with 396. I am assuming the Oval Port as well.

I don't have any data to back any of this up, but I think back in the day they only put those high performance motors in the Chevrolet cars. The trucks were more utalitarian (sp?). I don't see why it would be any different for engine installs into the GMC line. Somebody might chime in and say, "Spanky Yunik raced a '67 shortbed GMC and someone's uncle special ordered one just like it with a 375 horse 396 with a speed warning indicator and A/C..." but I doubt it.

Re: Easy/Dumb question about heads
Your heads are oval port .. Just rebuilt the motor in my 72 bb and the casting # on the head is 6272292.. If you pull the valve cover and get the cast# we could tell you what you got for sure . I would be interested to know if it is the same as mine ??

Re: Easy/Dumb question about heads
CatsEye - Father-in-law's truck I am fixing up . Been working on it for a couple months , but it is 180 miles from me - so it is slow going until I get it home. Still have a question though - anytime I try to get info on gaskets headers always comes up with ROUND or SQUARE options. So is OVAL really ROUND when looking for parts??? I see the cars are usually ROUND, but not HiPo.
Thanks! |
