Front locker issues?

I came across a front axle for my 3/4t, but its got a locker in it. I plan on putting my truck in the mud between 5 and 10 times this summer, but first and foremost, I would like to be able to use it on the road (thinking winter time here) What issues are there with having a locker in the front axle....is it really only good for going in a straight line?
Also, is there anyway to prove that this front diff. has a locker in it other than pulling the cover? If I do pull the cover, is it basically just that I won't see spider gears in the diff?

Re: Front locker issues?

I believe you should be fine to run it on the street if it has a locker. One way to find out if it has a locker with out taking the diff cover off is to jack the front tires off the ground, turn one wheel as if you were driving down the street, and watch the other tire, watch to see if it rotates as well and in the same direction, you can also have someone help you by holding the other wheel and see how the wheels rotate.

Re: Front locker issues?

If you leave the hubs unlocked on the street, it won't be noticeable at all. In 4wd, though, test drive it in the ice or heavy rain so you can get a feel for how it handles.
