re finishing floors

I wasnt sure if this warrented a new post or not, but i think its progress. lol

a little back story - I recently pulled the mat out of my blazer to re route some stereo wires... well what i found was not pleasing... quite a bit of surface rust on my floors. to make a long story short... my old insulation and floormat has been chucked, my drivers seat is tore down to the raw frame, and I am cleaning up and painting the floor to slow down, if not stop the rust. here are some pics

It took about 2 hours with a scraper and misc other tools to get all the old crappy insulation off, and as you can see by the pictures, there is still some left. but it will be all cleaned before painting

I am cleaning the rust off the metal with a wire cup wheel on a grinder, then cleaning the area to be painted with some thinner and a scotchbrite pad, then a final wipe down with cleans easy and a clean rag... so far the paint seems to be adhering very well.

This is the worst of the spots. it was caused by a hole in the floorboard cause by a driveshaft letting loose.

Here is a closeup of the worst area.

here are some shots of the overall, and a little progress, im painting it in sections to make it easier on myself.

THe goop by the heater is liek tar, from the old insulation stuff.

Heres a pic of the rig. I know i know, the paint is chipping around the headlights.

Once it is painted, fatmat and new carpet will be in order.

Re: re finishing floors

errrr , atleast you have no rust to fix. I have a hole on the driver side i recently noticed when also pulling carpet etc. up. I dont mean i can see the road under me... but it needs to be cut back to solid metal and patched....

your floor is coming along really nice though...

Re: re finishing floors

Just a thought but you may want to use a good rust preventive product on their first then paint over that. It would help keep that floor in as nice of shape as it is now. Also go thru and scrape out and replace any seam sealer while you are this far. I know it is alot more work but trust me it is a lot cheaper and easier than replacing your floor down the road.

Re: re finishing floors

I'm thinking about having line-x sprayed on my floor once the repairs are done. That should seal it up nicely, and provide a good surface.

Re: re finishing floors

Actually there are a couple small holes, over by the drivers rocker, and another on the pass side front corner... im not sure what to do about them... I dont have a mig welder...

doing this is just to slow down whats there right now.

Use 3m 8115 to glue up the holes. Best product you will ever use to seal up the holes. You can also use it as seam sealer if you would like.

Re: re finishing floors

There's new stuff out there called lizardskin. It's great!! Body shutz and insulation and sound deadener in one. Can be sprayed on like body shutz. Coat your whole floor with it.
