which starter for the crate 350's?

Where are you guys getting starters for these crate motors? The last 4 places I have gone all show me the same starter. The bolt holes are all similar, but the drive doesnt engage the flexplate(153 teeth), its about an inch off from engaging. It seems the guys at autozone, checker/kragan and car quest have no clue!!!!

Try to get a starter off of a 267 I think most of them had the small 153 tooth flywheel. Early monte carlos had them and malibu's

I like the new mini starters. Put one on my 85 vette. Next time I need one for my 67 --will put one on it also. I believe for 153 tooth, the bolt holes are staright across - not staggard.

Re: which starter for the crate 350's?

I stopped buying these life time guaranteed pieces of crap starters a long time ago. I know factory are expensive but they are a hundred times better. Now last week I went into the local gm dealer and asked for a starter for my mid 80's big block and they handed me a made in taiwan starter. Well I passed and couldnt believe they no longer make one in the states. So I went to a local race shop and picked up a mini high- torque unit for 120$ worth every penny. My last mini lasted nine years and the only reason it failed was my abuse. After doing some research I found that japanese mini starters work real good. But the bottom line is high-torque for sure especially if your engine is more power than stock but either way dont waste your time, unless you just like to change starters for fun and chew up fly wheels and flex plates for a hobby. Once you hear your engine turn over with one of these newer units you wont believe the difference. Also I am running mini starters on six small blocks and two big blocks and I havent had to shim one yet and as a matter of fact the only one that I have bought that even came with shims is the latest one I just puchased wich kind of scared me but i'll see tommorrow. Now that i've been braggin about ease of installation ill probably be shimmin my a$$ off. I just went out into my garage and read the instructions on my new unit and they said that the shims are only to be used on early model blocks that came stock with a iron nose starter because these blocks differ from later models bb or sb applications.... hope this helps. And yes my new starter was made back east some place but most importantly in the USA.......
