o boy...just when i was wondering if the guy's upstairs had forgotten about me...BOOM....
BEEN HAVING SOME BAD LUCK AS OF LATE..

well any way, i was checking the oil and adding some on the 69 and then started it up. noticed the alternator drivers side mounted sb style.
shaking as normal for years. looked at the bolts..

ones half out. go to tighten !!!
nope its broken about 1/8 inch in the head

well this is when my stomach sunk. been having this feeling alot as of late.
pulled on the bolt, the broken ends all rusty and smashed.
been broken for some time..well there's only two bolts holding this thing as we all know, how the whole thing had not just fallen off, and caused all kinds of damage no one knows.
well if you look at where these bolt holes are..it's not good..
i say a little prayer.. cut down a drill bit and use the air drill and drilled a hole
in the bolt.. out it came with the easy out..

this could have been real ugly,, real fast.
said another prayer..

why do i think god blessed me

was able and blessed with the tools to drill out with out removing the fan or anything.

the alt. had not fallen off and caused tons of damage

the bolt backed right out..

i had new bolts on hand to replace the old ones with.

it was a 15 min. repair

OK i am done..i just want to say sometimes we take the little things for granted..included a couple pictures to show...god bless mark

Speaking from experience, I can say that if that bolt would have broke off, nothing too damaging would have happened. Ask me how I know.

I bought my truck in 1994. It is pure mutt. Since day one I've been putting new bolts in there after one breaks off.

I bought a different set of mounts for the alternator. Bolts still broke.

New engine. Still broke. New grade 8 hardware. Still broke. New crank pulley. Still broke.

Now finally, after breaking another one on the way to a fishing club tournament one year ago, I replaced the water pump pulley and crank pulleys with known good pulleys from known 67-72 sources. I'm still knocking on wood but so far so good. The shake you talk about is gone. I MAY have finally took that bit of cowboy engineering out. (The truck was "assembled" in Wyoming with numerous years of trucks supplying parts)

I had one snap once, turned out the previouse owner installed a way too short bolt in there... it was in the head about 4 or 5 threads. I got lucky on that one... more so than you.
Broke while I was on the road, smelled coolant, looked down, guage was reading melt down, so I pulled off the freeway right at the front gate at Ft Hood, opened the hood and saw exactly what happened... and there was some sticking out of the head! I turned it out with my bare hand! Just happened to have a 9/16 wrench in the cab, and found a longer bolt in the bed. I was back on the road in 15 min.
Wasn't even late for work.

The bolt on the outside on mine was broke, the one on the middle was stripped out (bad enough that I didn't need a drill to put a helicoil in it

). I guess the belt tension was the only thing holding mine in. I got the broke one out with a left handed drill bit (yes it did work in my case).

I had the same thing happen also. It shorted out my voltage regulator, when the altenator fell (truck got a litte warm too!). I replaced it with a grade 5 bolt. Not has strong, but it is less brittle. Hopefully, it will handle the vibrations better.
