Removing Tailgate latch

My tailgate latch is binding, so the gate won't stay up. I want to take it off, but the screws are refusing, I have tried the biggest screwdriver in my box, an electric drill, a pneumatic drill, basically everything short of stripping the freakin' thing. I guess after 3-4 paint jobs it's just stubborn. Any advise or ideas?

Re: Removing Tailgate latch

You can drill them out. We've had to do that at times. Also you may try one of those impact screw drivers. it works sometimes

Re: Removing Tailgate latch

pick the screw driver that gets the best bite on the screw and has a good solid handle. Put it on the screw, push down and turn slightly to the left, then give it a couple good licks with a hammer, not hard enough to bend the sheet metal of course. Poor mans version of impact screw driver, its been known to work.

Re: Removing Tailgate latch

You could try leaving the gate down and soaked in penetrating oil first all day. Might help.

Re: Removing Tailgate latch

Take an old screw driver that fits tight. Cut the end of it off. Weld it to an old socket. Take your air impact (you do have one don't you) and go forward first . Then remove them. Works "most" of the time.
