Quicker ratio box
I've seen stuff on this before and realize that AGR and some others offer a quicker ratio box, but I thought I saw something on using a later model truck box to accomplish this or............. What's the best way to accomplish this spending as little as possible?

Re: Quicker ratio box
I do not know how many turns lock to lock the AGR box is. Could somebody post this?
The stock 69-72 PS box is 4 1/4+ turns lock to lock. The 73+ PS box is 3 1/4+ turns lock to lock. Unless the AGR box is faster, I recommend the 73+ box from your local yard - around here they charge $16.50 for a PS box. Hope this helps - Bob

Re: Quicker ratio box
The only difference you will find is that on I think 81 and up the fittings for the hose lines are now metric thread with O-ring fittings, vice the old style fittings. I forget exactly what year the change happened, but I know 82 to 87 are metric.

Re: Quicker ratio box
Jim - yes a bolt in. Must use the rag joint that comes with whatever box you choose. The input shaft has a different diameter than the 69-72. The intermediate shaft bolts to either rag joint. Somewhere(don't know what year) GM went to metric hoses with an O-ring. I recommend the standard double flare hose. You should be able to use your existing hoses(if in good condition) or replace with the hose listed for your year truck.
You should not have any difficulty finding a box at Rancho Cordoba. That is the junkyard mecca as far as I am concerned. Everything a guy could want/need is there. Hope this helps even more - Bob

Thanks.
Bob - I live just a few miles from the Rancho Cordova salvage yards and there's definately a little bit of everything out there! |
