Add-A-Leaf Experience
My`72 Highlander Came to me with Add-A-Leafs.It sits nice,a bit higher than stock. When I got it I noticed one rear leaf had broken in 1/2 and 1/2 was missing.I`ve seen broken leafs,no big deal.I thinkit was the first time I went to town in it.As I went over a manhole cover I heard a clank and jangle.I stop and run back to see what it was,a 1/2 of a leaf.I threw it in and figured it was the other 1/2 of the broken one.It was from the other side.Today,I got started unbolting to install the 6" lift I`ve had for it(4 spring packs).I started on the front. After un-bolting the u-bolts,I noticed the springs were kinked over the axle.Well, one side had a leaf broke in two.It got dark, but I wonder if the fourth spring pack has a broken leaf as well.I admit, the springs were probably pretty fatigued when the Add-A-Leafs were installed.

Re: Add-A-Leaf Experience
Makes me wonder. I used to haul a lot of heavy weight with mine and have never broken anything.

Re: Add-A-Leaf Experience
Could be coinsidence. This truck saw alot of unpaved road use in south Wyoming/north Colorado and the last owner had been using it as a work truck. The original owner babied it for most of it`s life. The shocks were in the worst shape I`ve ever seen, bushings missing, covers loose, and they were big Gabriels,I believe. But it did look like the Add-A-Leafs had put tension against the old leafs(s`posed to)and caused them to kink.I`m going to look at the last corner this morning.Nothing fell out,but it had the kink once I freed it up.I haven`t gotten to the shackle bolts yet,so they`re still on the truck.

Re: Add-A-Leaf Experience
My '72 came out of the coal mines of WV, which as I learned posed some interesting problems... Anyway, I had it loaded down HEAVY on day 1, with 2 trips, (split the load in half)... So the next day, leaving the house, I hear a pa-klink, twang, sound... there's a hole in the floor of my wood bed (plywood), the width & thickness of one of the leafs... I never did find the piece that took off, but the rest of the pieces were still under the axle... Limped her home, and took the bike to work...
My old camaro broke leafs on both side when I "got air" one night in it (isn't highschool great...) I drove it like that for 6 months before I had the money to fix them... Never had a problem with the broken leafs there... |

Re: Add-A-Leaf Experience
The '72 came out of Kimberly, which is between Montgomery & Deep Water. They guy I bought it from worked at Brown (?) Chevrolet, and had taken it in on trade.
The air in the camero involved unknown roads, excessive speeds, and a railroad track that was about 3 feet above the road. it was cool going up... but the landing sucked! knowing what I know now, I'm suprised the car made it home... (speaks for the reliability of Chevy's...) |
