big block headers and dual exhaust

I've got an exhaust leak on the passenger side exhaust manifold that started leaking 2 weeks after I had it fixed. On top of that, the current dual exhaust is about to fall off the truck.

So... new exhaust time. Since I'm planning to get a winter beater because the gas milage on the truck kills me, the truck will see significantly less salt than it used to, so I'm not so afraid of headers now.

The truck is an 87 TBI 454 1-ton 4x4. The exhaust that's on there now tucks up nicely, and runs OVER the cross member and rear axle, which is a configuration that I'd like to retain. It's a 2.5" system that bolts directly to the stock exhaust manifolds. It looks too nicely made to be some homemade setup.

I'd like to retain the 2.5" dual exhaust setup, and I'd like it to tuck up nicely instead of hanging below everything. Does such a setup exist? Everything I find seems to be either no-name stuff, or a single exhaust with dual pipes designed to bolt to the stock cat.

Anybody have some header & dual exhaust combos on their 1 ton that they'd like to comment on?

Also, I've heard stories on the 454ss website that headers & dual exhaust on a tbi 454 will cause it to run too lean unless you upgrade the fuel pump. I'm not necessarily opposed to upgrading the pump, but I'd like to hear if anybody here had any similar issues.

Re: big block headers and dual exhaust

Nobody else runs a dual exhaust on a big block 4x4?

Hooker makes a big block kit for a 2wd truck, but not for the 4x4.

Hooker makes a small block kit for the 4x4. It seems to me that long tubes on a small block and long tubes on a big block would dump in relatively similar locations. Anybody know what sort of difference we're talking about here?

Re: big block headers and dual exhaust

The X pipe kit I sell for 4x2's are for either BBC or SBC since most long tubes end about the same area. I am using short Sanderson Headers though.

Re: big block headers and dual exhaust

Thanks, that's good to know. I was looking at that kit on your site and it looks nice. If ground clearance wasn't a concern, and if it would fit a 4x4, I'd be all over it.

Anyway though, that's good to know about the headers.
Thanks
