New Engine!
After a year of saving and bargain hunting, the 383 is done. It's the first engine I've built from the ground up, so say a prayer for me when it goes on the dyno on the 19th.
Here are the details: 383 small block, Vortec heads with all the necessary mods done(ARP studs, clearanced for the lift, Lunati springs, retainers and keepers), Crower 222/230@.050 .470/.488 hydraulic cam, Crane gold race roller rockers, Holley 670 street avenger, totally redone points dist. with Ignitor II and MSD. The short block is a Scat stroker crank w/Eagle 6" full floating rods, SRP dished pistons w/file fit rings. The whole rotating assembly is internally balanced. Zero decked block gives 9.75:1 compression. Here's the bare block.

It was a points dizzy in a former life, its been totally torn down and rebuilt with an Ignitor II ignition and matching coil, MSD cap and rotor. Ran on a machine to give 24 deg at 2800 rpm.

With that covered...she looks like she should be a screamer. What power levels are you crossing your fingers for?

400 hp/425 ft-lb would be great, don't want to be overly optimistic. I'm more scared than anything, it being the first I've totally built myself and all that.

Sounds good Tom. When its back on the road (needs some brake work) I'll head down towards Bismarck and we can go cruising.

Did you find this rebuild to be more expensive than say a ZZ4 Crate engine or less expensive? A new ZZ4 is around 3 -3500. I have a four bolt main sitting on a stand but felt it would be cheaper to buy than build.
I would like 350 to 400 HP as well. Thanks and the engine looks great!

I haven't totaled it all up yet, but it will come out around $3000-3400. That total is with a year of bargain hunting for the parts and includes every last bolt.

i'm running a cam similar to that cept its comp's xe268 and its 224/230 477/480 with vortec heads on my 406. the idle doesnt have that much lope to it but don't let that fool you, it's more torque than you'll ever need. you best get a posi (if you dont already have some) and slicks (if you take it to the track). i'm planning on taking it to the track this spring. post your times if you drag it.
scoggin dickey did a similar buildup except they used 5.7 rods and an rpm air gap manifold & 1.6 rockers, 9.6:1, carter 625 carb (aka edelbrock performer) and got 407hp@5200rpm 460 ft. lbs. @4000 i dont see why they ran an air gap manifold when it peaked at 5200. the regular performer would lower the torque peak a little which would be nice. it lists the part numbers if anyone wants to know. over 400 ft lbs at 2500.

you could email them and they could prolly tell ya. go to their website www.sdpc2000.com and i think u can get a free catalog. i got all the info out of their catalog. they have alot of tech tips in the catalog which is kind of nice. dart iron eagles there are about the same price as vortecs. i'd get those if i were ever to buy brand new heads.
