power steering?
i know some of you have to be without it. how much of a difference is there bettween having it and not? i am debating on whether or not to put it on my 67. it will have 20" wheels if that makes a difference too. if i decide to put it on there? what exactly do i have to do?

The difference is like night and day. I could steer my '72 with my tinky. I have installed it in my 70, wouldn't be without it. You can pull the power steering pump and brackets from any small block chevy. The steering box will have to come off a truck or Blazer.

none of the steering linkage has to be changed? just the box? i can get the pump and brackets no problem?

You will also need to get the w/ the PS Pump but other then that nothing else has to be changed!

You may also be lacking an indentation in your frame where the steering gear mounts. The later trucks had them from the factory. I think it can be hammered in without too much trouble.

I added power steering to my 72 in January. Just picked up a gear box and pump at the salvage and did a direct swap. The hardest part was disconnecting the pitman arm. Now it is soooo much easier to steer.

yes, a later model steering box will have a buldge on the side of it causing a problem mounting to the frame on a 67 (been there, done that). I will probably be easier to space or shim the steering box away from the frame. It won't take much, maybe 1/2". Also, make sure you get a box from a 2wd with the pitman arm as 4wd boxes and pitman arm are different and not interchangeable.

Just put it on my 67....And I should have done it earlier...It is so much easier now...Power brake booster next..Good luck...

You will also need crank and water pump pulleys to match the PS pump, if you don't already have them.
On an inline, you need the harmonic balancer; the pulley cannot be removed from the HB. Watch out -- in the early 70s, the timing mark shifted. |
