Front Drive Shaft

My front drive shaft was rattling and clanking, and shaking the hole truck when I bought it.

I decided to change the U-joints, and discovered that the CV ball and seat are eaten to nothing. Where can I buy a new shaft, or is it possible to have this one rebuilt. The slip joint is pretty worn on mine too. It may not be worth rebuilding.

I saw a front shaft in LMC, but don't really trust them. Any other possibilities?

thanks for your help.

Re: Front Drive Shaft

I got my front driveshaft lengthened out as Brake Service, and they thought my CV was bad and it would cost about 200 bucks to fix. But, the counterman being the genious he was,he got looking at the shaft and saw that it a was just a u-joint gone. He even gave us a free u-joint to put in.
So yeah they can be fixed, but it will be pricey. I think LMC has the parts to fix it up, but they cost quite a bit. I'd start heading to junkyards or looking around the for-sale section. Note that if your truck has a Rockwell t-case, a NP205 shaft will NOT work, it's too long. You need the Rockwell drive shaft. Good luck.

Re: Front Drive Shaft

just take it to a reputable driveshaft shop. i was lucky enough to get a discount through my dad's account, but it wouldnt have been too pricy anyway. it was only slightly over $100 about 3 years ago.

Re: Front Drive Shaft

If the tit that the ball goes on is not eaten up, the CV kit from NAPA has the yoke/ball combo in it, at least the newer trucks I've worked on have. The machine shops here can cut off and replace bad ends.

Re: Front Drive Shaft

Thanks guys. I will have to do some looking for a machine shop, and talk to the guys at NAPA. If anyone else has ideas, I'd like to hear them.
