Its only money

its that time , engine overhaul . yes i am overhauling on a budgit . and some says a old outdated enging . just tore down my old 283 thats seen better days , crank shaft is fine . that's more than i can say for the cylinders . to build a over priced 283 or crate ....... i ll build . found a master overhaul kit , mains , rods , cam , cam bearings , oil pump , expansion plugs , gaskets , pistons , rings and timming set . going to do a small up grade on the timming set and cam . ( little better than stock , but not much more for a daily driver ).going to have machine work and parts for less than 550. time will tell . will do the cleaning at work ( pressure cabinet ) . 11.00 $ a hole to have cylinders bored and honed . 88.00 $ in machine work . my problem will be my heads ( old style , leaded fuel ) i have a couple sets thts good for 283 . not to big for small bore ( just going .030 over ) to cut for seats or use new valves that is used in place of seats . will finnish on dissassemble and take to have bored monday . cast 2 barrel intake ,canister oil filter and cast hump style manifolds .......... can we say old style and keeping it .

cool. I'm wanting to rebuild a 283 for my 67 too. I heard 305heads are a good way to get the hardened valve seats for the unleaded fuel. I guess then you'd have accesory holes you might not want though.
How was your truck set up? What kind of mpg did it get? My 63bel-air with the 283 seems to be decent on gas.

dont know the mpgs , didnt run a tank af gas befor starting taking appart ...
cab floor pans back in . front part of frame painted . starting on engine .... must have knowned there was a problem with 8 plug foulers , starting clearing up after running it for a couple weeks , but it needed some help . the step up is odd . front brakes from 78 , cab and wiring from gmc ( 68 ) , step fenders from 65 , engine from truck 61 / 65 , new radiator , new one wire alt , cab mounts off of mack transmission 3 speed trans ......... home made

I have had a couple or so 283 in my past and they are good engines, People talk up the 350's but I never had any complaints aboout my 283's. I had one in a 62 Chevy pickup with 12.5cr ran awsum, drove it from texas to NH and all over he77 with it and got an average of 16mpg with 3.90 gears. I had another 283 in a 56 chevy pickup with 3.90 gears that I beat the sh!t out of for 5 years sold it to a buddy and he drove it for another 4years beating on it and sold it to some girl who was going to restore it. I used to average right around 16mpg on that one two. The only thing I can add to building these is try and find the smallest chamber heads you can get your hands on, 305 heads with 58cc or 64cc heads, dont put those 76cc heads on them you will kill the compression, 3" stroke even with flat top pistons & small cylinders is hard to get the compression up there, even with 58cc chamber heads you'll be lucky to hit 9.1 cr which is good for the street, Vortec heads would also be good for a 283 build..

Hey, good to hear another 283 builder. I am planning building the 283 in my garage to put in my truck. Planning on doing pretty much what you did on yours, depending on what it looks like when I tear it down. Probably put a 4 bl carb back on it. Have a couple 2 bl intakes but prefer a 4bl. What size of carb you using cfm and 2 or 4 bl? Been told much over 500 cfm would not be good because of 283 set up. Good luck on it .

My first half ton (66 long step chev)had/has a 283 and converted to 3 on the floor with low gears.I tortured that thing for many years with not a lick of trouble.They are super tough little rats.It's retired to the bone yard for now,but I hope to turn it into the next project after the money pit is finished.

Ran quite nicely on 93 octane, never pinged, this was also 20 years ago, it also ran quite well with aviation fuel..if you didnt pay attention putting plugs in you would close the gaps right up from the pistons hitting them. I had the Fuelies redone by a local machine shop here and they screwed them up big time, it went through so much oil I ended up putting a set of smogger heads on it and boy could I tell the difference.

okay its been awhile , back on engine ( after generatot went out of vw bug did yoy know you have to pull enging to replace that thing ....... and computer securtiy shut down my 2003 4.3 chevy ) its 6-9-06 engine bored went to .030 - overhaul was a little more than i wanted but a few up grades will be worth it in the long run ...... better rings , up grade on came , better timming set and high vol. oil pump . what psi should it run ? came in at 306.00 slowly going back crank pollished out std . okay .... i know the rear freeze plugs are still out , and its going to be epoxy painted white with chevy orange trim
