I'm confused about an extra "C" in VIN number ??

I just pickedup a '72 Blazer 2wd and I'm confused with the VIN number on the VIN plate. There seems to be an extra leading "C" in the number

"CCE182F175076"

Can anyone explain to me why there would be an extra C that isn't recognized in the VIN decoding program at americanclassic.com?

BTW, I will probably be selling this 2wd blazer. I'll put a post in the for sale section in a few days.

In`72 GM started the prefix to seerate the GMCs from the Chevys. Before that, you could put a Chey grille, horn cap, emblems, and tailgate on a GMC(or vtsa versa)and the number wouldn`t give it away. The Chevys got the "C" and the GMCs bot the "T" since vans already used the "G".

Ok, thanks for the info special-K

So, is that prefix a part of the official VIN, or is it considered a code?

That is correct, however, the GMC VIN was always totally different from a chevy.

It actually tells on the vin. plate( most of them) whether it's a chevy or gmc.

I'll have to admit, I never noticed it on the vin plates until a couple of months ago. It's amazing what can be overlooked.

You didn't compair the VIN to the title when you got your truck?

had I not done that, I woulda been in a world of hurt. I looked at mine the next day (and 450 miles later) and found it to be all jacked up. Had I never looked, it woulda been discovered by the state and they MAY have confiscated my rig untill everything was cleared up.
