Supplies for a long trip
Hey Guys - In a few weeks I will be trying to drive my 72 GMC from central California all the way down to San Diego. It's about 394 miles, but I would like to get some input on what to take in case of an emergency. I plan on bringing a fire extinguisher, extra water, gas, tools, and my buddy will be following me with a car dolly in case it can't make it. The truck has been sitting for a while, but I just had it checked out and everything seems ok. Any other tips or advice?

Re: Supplies for a long trip
a good spare tire and TIRE CHAINGING TOOLS, a cell phone or calling card, a bite to eat, an extra pack of smokes, a roll of duct tape and electrical tape, a couple bungie cords, some mechanics wire or bailing wire, some electircal wire and crimp on connectors, and a sence of adventure.
And if the truck isn't worth towing home... take the title with you so you can sell it to the next guy you see withy a C-not burning a hole in his pocket. |

Re: Supplies for a long trip
Make sure your friends tow dolly is wide enough to accept the truck front end. Several guys on here have run into that problem. I guess when they build these dollys they are thinking econo car, not big f'in pickup truck!

Re: Supplies for a long trip
2 quarts engine oil,2 transfluid., 4 small hose clamps and a couple peices of hose 1/4 3/8's, extra set of belts, duct tape, penetrating oil, tie wire or 2-3 wire hangers, a basic set of tools and a big hammer. oh yea a spare tire and jack wouldn't hurt either.

Re: Supplies for a long trip
Over the years I have accumulated a list of stuff that I have needed and not had on hand during a long trip. Here goes (some of this is listed above):
Full set of belts and hoses. I will generally change them before the trip and use the old ones for spares. Heater hose plastic union (in case the heater core begins leaking, I can bypass) Hose clamps (various sizes) Fuel line (at least a couple of feet) Fuel pump (just a cheap solid state backup) Spare tire and a 4 way lug wrench (can apply more loosening torque than a regular Ell shaped wrench) 3 or 4 wrenches of the common sizes (3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16) and an adjustable A flat and a phillips screwdriver 2 quarts of engine oil 1 gallon of tranny fluid 5 gallons of gasoline 1 pint brake fluid A roll of duct tape and electrical tape A roll of bailing wire. (this stuff is great in a pinch). Depending on the weather: Blanket, and some drinking water and food bars. That should get you out of just about any jam short of a catastophic failure of the drivetrain. Tim
