Water Pump Styles??? Help.

OK, I am new to SBC engines being a Pontiac man. I need a new water pump for my 72 Cheyenne with a 350 (original). Long or short? 1 or 2 outlets? 4 or 8 holes?

Good lord, just give me a pump!!! OK, I can see 4 hole since the fan is attached with 4.

2 Outlet? is this one for the lower rad hose and one for the heater hose?

How do I know long or short? Someone told me the stock 72 would be short.

Help.

Short pump for 72. It will have a heater hose port that you can use or plug. Some years returned to rad. Good point cowboy. pic of pumps.

Re: Water Pump Styles??? Help.

Howdy:
Ditto here on being more experienced with other makes- had a long time thing with Olds BB stuff, and (gasp!) even blue ovals. Hqave this '67 swb C10 though, and have had to learn; still learning.
Go to the Mortec website- they have a bunch of info and did a great job of illustrating long vs short waterpumps and a long list of casting numbers to help with block and head identification, which I likewise needed to know nearly immediately. Since a lot of things could have happened in the years since our trucks were new, take nothing for granted! Just because your truck was supposed to come with, say, a short water pump, check to be sure it's still outfitted that way. Mine probably came with a 283 and TH350- it has a 350 and TH 400 (the block from the casting numbersand stamped numbers,is a '75, the heads were the worst 350 heads GM ever released, circa 1985. So many poorly done things under the dash, my only choice was to rewire- but, I'm gettin' away from the point) The guy who did the work, however, should be banned from trying to use tools, as he has no talent and less intelligence.
Have it mostly sorted out now, but just verify things before you start work.
Hope the website helps some!

Re: Water Pump Styles??? Help.

Actually the th400 was the stock and only 3spd auto. The other auto was the powerglide. The TH350 didn't arrived until 69 I believe. Places to look for what you have or had in the truck would be the glovebox door and in the springs under the seat for the build sheet. Another easy clue is your vin. If it starts CS you had a 6 cylinder, CE you had an 8.
