Re: Look what I found in my garage!! A long lost friend!!

I have heard the same thing.

Does your long hardline along the frame have about a 90 degree bend to meet up with the rear brake hose?

Re: Look what I found in my garage!! A long lost friend!!

It does, and I think that is where I might have ordered the wrong set. When the frame was a LWB, the hose ran from the rearend, up to that tab with the * shaped hole, then connected to a hard line that ran behind that crossmember over to the frame, then turned 90*, THEN connected the the long line.

The line I have now that runs along the frame rail does end in a 90* bend that is about 3" long or so, but it makes it's bend and exits right under the crossmember that holds the upper shock mounts (which, IIRC, was how the 68 was set up).

I am going to cut that one back a little bit and flare it with a fitting on it. Then today I am going to buy a 5' piece of hard line and bend it up that same as the original line that ran from the rubber hose along the back x-member over to the frame. I have a feeling that is what the two piece set is- the long frame run, and the one from the frame rail to the rubber hose.

Re: Look what I found in my garage!! A long lost friend!!

I was just going to post that it looks like your setup is for a LWB, the rear brake hose heads toward the rear of the truck, mine heads toward the front of the axle.
I did tweak my rear lines a little and now the 'junction' sits near the axle cover. I do have a brack I can use now.

Looking closer at your pics and what I have, I think inline gave me a few wrong pieces... I'm headed up there at lunch to straighten it out.

Thanks for your pics - it is a HUGE help
I love this site

Re: Look what I found in my garage!! A long lost friend!!

No problem!!!! I wasn't aware the LWB and SWB were different in those areas. That's what I get for shortening a LWB frame! It drives the parts counter computer readers at the parts store nuts when I go to get parts:

"What year is your truck?" I sound like an old Johnny Cash song trying to explain it to them.

LOL it was like a Cash song.

Turns out I have a 71 chassis, not 72. They told me when the rear line goes into the RH frame rail, that is 71 specific. They exchanged my 2 piece 72 frame rail hard line for a one piece 72 hard line with the 90 bend at the end.

I also bought the union kit I needed. I'm headed out to install it now

Re: Look what I found in my garage!! A long lost friend!!

I really like how you did your cross member. I was planning on doing the same thing to mine. Does that interfere with the routing of the emergency brake cables? Also, I noticed on each side of the hole that the driveline passes through that you've got two holes on each side (on the inside of where the rear trailing arm mounts are). Any clues about what those are for? I've got a '71 short frame and it's got I think six of those on each side. I was going to close them up because I didn't like the way it looks and I thought maybe some PO drilled them out. If that's how it came from the factory, I'll probably leave it alone.

Re: Look what I found in my garage!! A long lost friend!!

If you look below and to the outside of the exhaust pipe holes, you can see the original plastic grommets in the holes that the brake cables run through. No interference at all. The holes are all factory. One universal x-member for different carrier bearings and so forth.

Re: Look what I found in my garage!! A long lost friend!!

So would it be safe to say that a PO drilled extra ones in mine? And do they serve any purpose?

If they are in the same place mine are, they are factory. Can you get a pic?

Re: Look what I found in my garage!! A long lost friend!!

LOL!!! Sounds great!

I got the rear brake line bent up and in place tonight. Since the found front to rear line was too short, I went to NAPA and got a 60" piece of line and folded it up. Shortened the long line up a touch, bent it up, and there we have it!

Re: Look what I found in my garage!! A long lost friend!!

I obviously don't know how to post pics anymore. It just says that my 437.0 KB exceeds the 100.0 KB limit. Even if I go into paint and size the pic down, it still says the same thing.
