Pics of my Dad's 72 C20 Camper Special

My Dad bought this a couple of years ago, did some minor body work, then had the paint touched up. Since then, it has sat in his shop with the bed off, engine needing tuned up, and a minor tranny leak. I decided yesterday to forgo working on my chassis, and take advantage of him being gone to go "steal" it and finish it for him for Fathers Day!

My son (6yo) was VERY excited to help me work on Papa's truck. We got the bed back in place and bolted down, installed the new rear bumper, and installed the stainless steel bed caps, tailgate cap, and front panel cap. We then fixed the tranny leak then moved on to the engine. Turns out the vacuum advance was connected to manifold vacuum, and the timing was way off on top of that. Ran a new vacuum hose to where it should be, adjusted the timing and idle speed, and now it's a happy truck!

We left it in the driveway, and when we saw him drive by, we waited for a phone call. That only took a couple of minutes to get! He was VERY excited! So excited in fact, that he wanted to take my Mom to town to get some ice cream, but then realized that the tags had expired in July 2004!

Yeah, it's been awhile since he has driven it, but I noticed this morning he was out washing it. I have a feeling it will get some miles on it this summer.

Here are some pics I took before "returning" it. The clear looks like it is flaking off in the third pic (red, on the corner of the cab), but that is just a reflection of the clouds. The paint is actually very nice!

It is a 72 C20 Camper Special, 402/400, A/C.

Enjoy, and Happy Fathers Day!!!!

Happy Fathers day to you sir. You honored your father by your gift of love for him. But the memory you made with your 6 year old will last a lifetime. I thank God every day that there are still folks like you around.

Re: Pics of my Dad's 72 C20 Camper Special

Thanks guys. He is a great Dad, and is absolutely adored by my 2 kids (his only grandkids...think they aren't spoiled???!!) We never spent much time together when I was growing up, but know at 35 years old, we live very close together (that's his house in the first pic, the pic was taken in the back corner of my property) and are always at each others house.

As any other guy growing up in the fiftys, he loves hot rods of any kind. He has had the gammet of hot rods: a Merc, a couple of tri-fives, a Cameo, you name it. My 70 Chevy 4x4 that he gave me; he bought in 72 from the original owner. That is the truck that got me into the whole 67-72 thing. Damn him! LOL!

Re: Pics of my Dad's 72 C20 Camper Special

I've found that this kind of father's day gift is best. I've been doing the labor kind of gifts for a few years now. I took my dad's boat which hasn't seen a body of water in 7 years or so, and took it to work last night and took the steam cleaner and blasted all the mold off of it inside and out.... 7 hrs with the steam cleaner, 5 of them inside. Yeah, it was a bit warm in there... then I fixed the lights on the trailer, took it for a high speed blast down the freeway, and put it back in the driveway before he got home from work.

You did an awsome thing, and now you two get to share the hobby some more.
Happy fathers day to you, my son is getting ready to take me to go see the movie cars.
