Why I love factory timing chains, NOT
Pictures are worth a thousand words:
All the exhaust valves are smacked hard even the intakes got nicked pretty good.

Re: Why I love factory timing chains, NOT
I was only going about 30 mph, and i put it in neutral only about a second after it died. That happened like a year and a half ago and i just now finaly got the time to take it apart. lol Oh well. No one would believe me that it bent all the valves, but just look at the pics. lol

Re: Why I love factory timing chains, NOT
Was that top gear one of those ones with the nylon on the teeth? every one of those I have seen that failed like that had the nylon covered teeth on the upper gear. Either way it sucks to have that much damage due to a timing set failure. Hope you get it back on the road soon.

Re: Why I love factory timing chains, NOT
Yeah it was nylon gear, thats why I always use a double roller and steel gear on rebuilds.

Re: Why I love factory timing chains, NOT
I posted here Sunday about a problem with my son's '71. Running rough/backfiring, etc. I believe we've narrowed it down to the timing chain. It has a loud noise coming from the front cover. We're tearing into it Friday night.

Re: Why I love factory timing chains, NOT
How many miles did the engine have on it when it went ? Are you going to fix it or rebuild now ? Most of the pieces will end up in the oil pump screen, I'm sure you know that, but something to check.

Re: Why I love factory timing chains, NOT
At the wrecker one day I saw a little 4banger eagle talon turbo motor that blew the timing belt at like 5000rpm, all 4 pistons had huge holes in them!

Re: Why I love factory timing chains, NOT
Been there done that. It looks like my timing gear on my BBC about 20 years ago. It bent 8 exhaust valves and push rids were bent like "Z"s. It had 83k miles when it happened. My chevy 305 in my old nova started to go about 85k caught that one when I changes the oil and found the little pieces in the bottom of the drain pan(thats why I like to change my own oil). I changed the cam while I had it apart.
