New project 65 GMC

Well, got the truck home and work has started. It had two flat tires, so I ran over to a buddies to pick up some rollers. He had some old 33's off his jeep and a set of blazer rally rims, so I decided to check it out. The truck needs a motor, so it's high in the front, and there is a buick 455 in the bed, so it's low in the rear. I couldn't get the tires on the back due to the sagging, but up front they look hot. I've got a 10 bolt front laying around, and I'm VERY tempted to swap it in after seeing the stance. If not, I'll go with 31's on the same rims (or 5 lug if I get a complete donor truck for engine, brakes, power steering, etc).

The more I think about it, the more I'm liking the 4x4 swap. If I do, I will be taking lots of pictures and documenting my progress. I've written some tech articles for another site, so I'll try and show the easiest way to do it with basic tools. From mocking up, it's an easy DIY swap if you have a welder/buddy with a welder. Stay tuned!

There is a guy on this site who put a 500 caddy motor in his, buicks tend to be a little weak in the bottom end.

Cool. I say do the swap. Longbeds look better lifted than stock or lowered anyway.

Re: New project 65 GMC

First steps are gonna be getting it on good tires and putting a motor in it. It's ready to go for a 350, so that's gonna be the plan.

After that, I'm gonna patch up the few rust holes on it (all metal...bondo only for smoothing) and drive it. I'll see about putting together the front axle while I'm enjoying it.

Oh, the rear end is definitely a dana 44...is that a common option? I was pretty surprised when I crawled under to get a good look at it, I just assumed it was the old 12 bolt. Anyone have any info on it? 30 spline like the newer d44's, or is it the old 16 spline?

Re: New project 65 GMC

Your buddy has deeper pockets then I do

I'll be doing SOA...I like leaves better then coilovers anyway. Looks like he's got some clean fab work though, and should be able to get the crap wheeled out of it...looks like 38's he's running on that thar d60. Mine will be 4x4 to help pull the trailer with the jeep on it out of a muddy parking lot
