Post putting carrier in housing

what do you guys think: suppose I had a 71 12 bolt 3.07 complete and nice, and i had a 78 12 bolt housing that had a 3.07 in it but i removed it, and suppose i wanted to use the 78 axle under the 71 since it wil physically bolt under the truck, do you think i owul have any problems with setting the 71 carrier and shims and all into the 78 housing if I retoruqed everything same as it was before and used a new pinion crush sleeve ?

who thinks what ?
i may have ot do this if the 78 housing is not same width as the 71, it has the wider rear brakes I want to put on the 71, but wont work if the housings are not same with, i tihnk they are different, but am afraid to double check now.,


gotta love new challenges, always ends up with you learning lots new info and having new injuries

I have had no problems swapping guts from one housing to another. Don't mess with a new crush sleeve. Just swap everything over the way it is, torque to spec and you should be fine. After my Dad broke the first rear in the Jimmy circa 1980 he bought a boneyard axle and swapped it in. When it had a bearing fail, he swapped the guts from the original into the junkyarder and we drove it anothek 50k miles. I removed it only to go the first set of 4.10.

what torque do you think i should go with, or should i find out what torque it is right now and use that info ?

also, if i was to test pinion turning resistance in in/lbs, how owuld i go about measuring in in/lbs with ft/lbs wrench ?

whats the trick, i think its 12" wrench and use of a fish scale and hm i forgot how it works now,. thini if you connect fish scale end to the wrench at 12" away form center of the pinion nut then that will do it, i just want ot test that before and after, i really want to put the 78 axle housing under the 71 if possible, i may wait til i find a set of 3.73 gears again though, really dont want oto keep the 3.07 gears, in that case i can just sell the whole entire axle to someone or trade it for a 67-72 3.73 axle(if is leaf spring) or swap the 3.73 gears into the 78 axle housing, or whatever

Go by spec on the carrier bearings. On the pinion bearing, once you pull the donor carrier out, rotate the pinion and get a feel for how tight it is. SHoot for same in the new housing. Kind of like you would wheel bearings. Sneak up on it because you don't want to overtighten it.

By rights , you should replace the crush collar after you dismantle a diff. I have seen guys change a pinion seal,& just add .030 shim tween the crush collar & the yolk,then pull it up. You should have about 8-10 in lbs rotating tork(used bearings oiled),& a little more for new bearings.........69
