Upgrading my 72 C-10 (motor, brakes, transmission)

I have a '72 C-10. Has the original 250, 3 speed on the column, manual steering, manual brakes, etc. What I'm thinking about, however, is my son will be needing something to drive in a couple years, but for safety reasons, I was thinking about upgrading the brakes, maybe switching over to an automatic transmission, maybe even considering replacing the engine. I've not really ever looked into this in terms of feasibility and/or cost. Any suggestions on making my grandfather's classic an everyday driver for a teen...AND can it be done for $5000 or less (note, I'm not a mechanic!)

i think it is perfect as is for a teens first ride. it already should have disc breaks up front just make sure they are in good working order. check shift linkage bushings and ajustment to make sure it shifts smothly. a good tune up and safty inspection and belts and hoses. why give him to much power to start with and let him learn to drive a stick. just my opinion

I agree, too many young people today never have an opportunity to drive a stick

I'd go through the motor, brakes, trans and verify everything is in good working order. Replacing the motor may be an expensive waste

Dont put power brakes or anything like that in it. I am 16, my truck is all stock, and it works great for me. Just make sure everything is working well. My trucks brakes are great. Just make sure to show your son how to control the truck if he has to slam the brakes and such. The back tires will lock up if he slams on them, but this can be done safely.

DarkFox1 lives up your way and has that fresh rolling chassis with the 5.3/4L60E setup ready to go. I cannot be positive but I would think your insurance would be less expensive with discs and an auto trans.

Get a manual.Spend the time with your son rebuilding the brakes.Leave the tranny, learn to rebuild restore or modify what you need to get the truck as safe as possible. If he never gets behind the wheel the time you spend doing these things with him will be worth whatever you pay.The more interested he is the more you may want to do.Check in here for advice and guidance,
