What does it mean when...

OK,

I jacked the rearend of my truck up to check to see if I have a posi or not. I am on the passenger side, so that's the wheel I turn. The other wheel doesn't turn at all.

So I jack the rear end up a little more, incase the other was stuck to the dirt. I have it up about an inch off the ground and try again. Same thing.

I go to the driver's side and turn that wheel. The passenger side turns the opposite direction. I go back to the passenger side and turn it again...nothing.

Is my rearend screwed up? I thought you were supposed to be able to turn either wheel and the opposite would turn.

Thanks guys!

James

Re: What does it mean when...

THIS IS THE EASYEST WAY TO CHECK TAKE THE COVER OFF AND SEE IF IT LOOKS LIKE THIS.

If you can spin one side with the opposite tire on the ground, it is an open differential. If it is posi, you shouldn't be able to spin one side while the other is on the ground.

Re: What does it mean when...

billsbowtie, that is an accurate way to checkm but WAAYYY overkill.

But your jack under the center of the diff, put the trans in neutral, and spin one of the tires. If the other spins in the opposite direction or the driveshaft turns (without the other wheel spinning) you have an open diff, (which your's is BTW).

With posi or limited-slip, the wheel will spin the SAME direction.

Actually, if it's posi, if it's in nuetral and the rear-end is jacked up. the tires will spin in opposite directions.

I agree with 68speedalert. If it is an Eaton check the numbers on top of the pumpkin. GMC Paul's website has a referance chart

I won't say your wrong, but I've never seen it. From my experience (25 years wrenching), If you can make the other side turn opposite with a posi......the clutches in the diff are GONE!

With good clutches and trans in neutral, both tires turn the same AND the driveshaft will turn as well.

If you put the trans in gear (or park), a posi rear end will not even let ONE side turn, basically what glock35ipsc said.

Re: What does it mean when...

I'm with 68speedalert.....I've had many posi's (limited slip's) and the quickest way to check was like he said.
