bolt size

After installing electric fans and removing my flex fan I did not have any bolts the right size or short enuf to bolt the pully on to the water pump. So I had to bolt the spacer back on to hold the pulley on but looks nasty. So anyway what size and lenght bolt do I need?

Thanks

Re: bolt size

It's gonna be a fine thread bolt (I think it's a 1/4" bolt), mine are about 1/2" long. You should be able to take you spacer bolts and just get a shorter version right?

Re: bolt size

Should be 1/4-20 (coarse thread) X 3/8 or 1/2 long. Always use grade 5 or grade 8 for automotive applications. Grade 5 is a medium strength, grade 8 high strength. Most hardware store grade 8 bolts have a cadmium plate finish, gold colored, which is better than the zinc plate, silver color on grade 5. Takes longer for the cadmium plate to start rusting.

I saw this thread and it made me go check my water pump pulley mount bolts and they are 5/16th x 24 fine thread. You will need to space the pulley the correct distance from the water pump in order to maintain correct fan belt alignment.

I'm too used to working on old sixes. They're 1/4-20.
