Power Steering Pump Options with a Serpentine Setup
I've been looking around for the answer to this question and can't find it. Will my power steering pump work with the serpentine setup I'm about to install? Will the serp pulley go on the power steering pump that I have now?
I have a late 70's model power steering pump on there now. Didn't know if the fittings would match up or what. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Power Steering Pump Options with a Serpentine Setup
What I did was get the power steering pump off of the late model (same as serp setup came from) and used a compression fitting to splice the high pressure line (one that came with the pump to one on the truck). The return is just hose clamped on there.

Re: Power Steering Pump Options with a Serpentine Setup
so it won't work? that sucks
I already have the alt and ps bracket so I guess I'll just have to yank it off another serp bracket off the yard and hope the pumps good. does it matter if the pump is off a truck or S10 Blazer? I guess I mean will it matter if the pump is off a V8 or the 4.3?

Re: Power Steering Pump Options with a Serpentine Setup
Like krue said your best bet is get one from the serp setup. You can then change the Hi-Pressure fitting on the back of the pump out with the fitting on the old style pump, that way you can use a standard hi-pressure line without a compression fitting.

Re: Power Steering Pump Options with a Serpentine Setup
I believe that the only part that spins reverse is the water pump. You have a "P" style pump and to the best of my knowledge it has not change in many years. Go to rockauto.com and look up what pump you have and click on the cardone link to get a picture and then compare. I think you will find that the pump without resavior is the same. The differences are keyed shaft and .750 shaft and a metric shaft. To have it run reverse rotation would take a complete redsign, they can't just spin it backward and get pressure. That was the reason for the new mini pumps.

Re: Power Steering Pump Options with a Serpentine Setup
**EDIT** Which pump should I get? I never got an answer on that.
thanks for the responses guys. I knew I had to get a later model reverse rotation long water pump, but didn't know if I could get away with using the old power steering pump. I'll look for one at the junkyard when I go get the rest of the serp setup. Bryan

Re: Power Steering Pump Options with a Serpentine Setup
I should have pointed my ignorance out. I just posted what I did.

Re: Power Steering Pump Options with a Serpentine Setup
damn, I didn't know I had to change out the alt also!!!
I just tried to put my old alt in the bracket and it doesn't fit, not to big of a deal because my buddy gave me one last week. I just took it for the pulley. I guess my next post will be about trying to wire that thing up.
