Anyone ever put a diesel in a 67-72 blazer or jimmy?

The 4bt cummins has been around longer than dodge has been using the 6bt.Most 4bts are like the early dodge set up.Most 4bts that were used for automotive use were rated at 105 hp.Change the settings on the pump,change the housing size on the turbo and different injectors and you can make an easy 250hp.The marine 4bt is rated at 250hp.The 4bt has adapters available to use a GM auto or manual trans.It will not make the power of a 6bt,but it will get better mileage.It will be an easier fit than a 6bt,and unless you are doing some heavy hauling,it does not need an intercooler.I know a guy with one in a bronco.He is running around 170hp and with a 5spd gets 25-27 mpg! As long as you don't turn them up to high,even with an auto you get 20+mpg.I am getting 12 with my smallblock.Diesel around here is a few pennies cheaper that the lowest grade gas.

i would use a 6.5l turbo diesel 93 or older and thing to keep in mind it is a big block. us the 4l80 trans other than that drive it tell it dies which can be a verylong time the only thing that you might take into consedration is the distance you have to drive if its just a few miles stike with gas because your warm up will kill the fuel milage

By the length of the valve cover, it looks like a 4-53. But I don't know much. Is that a 2wd or 4wd GMC??

Go over to coloradok5.com and look for mosesburb. He's a good freind of mine and he bought out 72 burb project when we moved to colorado. He has all the pieces to put a 6BT into his 72 burb. The entire combo will be a 6BT that he found in a boneyard for $2200 that allready had the banks kit on it. The tran will be a NV4500 and the tcase will be a NP205. And it is getting one ton axles as it is a 4x. He also ditched the factory has infavor of a 87 burb harness. The engine isn't in yet but he has bought all the pieces to do it. I'm sure he can hook you up with all the sources to grab the adapters and such.

There is also a parts counterman who works for rocky mountain cummins....formerly cummins southwest...i'm sure nick can get you a phone number and you can chat with him sometime. He installed a 6bt in a 86 burb.

So between those two sources i'm sure they can get you pointed in the right direction.

I prefer the 6bt...but thats just me. i worked for freightliner for 10 years and those 6bt's were very solid motors...not a lot to go wrong. The 24 valve aka ISB is the same motor with electronics. The electronics are well thought out and rarely have any issue's...however if i had a dime for every inj. pump i had to change out...so...stick with the old 12 valve.

Cummins 6BT is the only way to go and they can be converted to most any transmission available. All those Grumman van Potatoe chip trucks use the 4BT and a turbo 350 or 400 transmission. The same adapter that is used in them alows 6BT to bolt right up. I have a 6BT in a 1949 Chevrolet One ton Pickup (9 foot bed), my experience is that the 6 BT has more power than the 4BT and will actually get the same or better mileage if set up properly and driven right. I own and drive 6 different Cummins powerd Trucks my old 1989 Dodge has over 500,000 miles with no problems except the old 727 tourqueflite transmission will slip a little when shifting thru second gear now when pulling a heavy load! My tater chip Grumman van now has the 6BT in it also. Just had to chime in! I will leave you all to your conversation. BYE

Cummins are great.But,the only way to go?NOT!!Cheaper way to go?NOT!!After running GM diesels in my daily bring home the bacon work trucks since back when only a diehard Mopar fan would foolishly own a Dodge in the 80s,it takes people telling me how worthless they are.Otherwise,I wouldn`t have ever known.Thanks for the heads up.

Except for the 2 batteries and the firewall mounting of the fuel heater/filter I cant seem it being a lot of extra work such as swapping from a sbc to a bbc. But the glow plug light that might get tricky trying to get a red light in the dash to turn on and off during start up. I have some hummer heads, turbo, and 'headers' that I might be adding to my 84 C10 as soon as I get the poly bushings installed.

I guess I could go back to a gas 350 and get 12-15mpg instead of 30-32mpg. 3$ per gallon hmmmm lets see 30 miles for 3$ or 30 miles for 7$ I like the 3$ choice plus tha clatter with dual turbo mufflers sounds like the neighborhood school bus rolling down the street I just love to go through the neighborhood one week prior to school starting and drive around a few times about the time the bus should come, you should see the startled look on these poor parents that think they have the wrong date for school starting ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!! (and my wife thinks this is cruel)

If the swap is done stay away from those 700R4s, it may be my experience but I have had mine rebuilt twice since 2004 and keep getting told that it cant handle the POWER of a boat anchor/diesel. Currently looking for someone in the Houston area to rebuild a 700R4 that doesnt want an arm and a leg and KNOWS what they are doing.

Go with the swap you enjoy it and get a hell of a lot better mileage.

I hear ya about the scool bus thing.When school "is" in and the kids are waiting,they hear me coming and start walking to the road.I can tell they thought it was "THE BUS".On my 6.2`Burb I have 3" exhaust with 6" round DynaMaxs,straight-thru.She really "cracks" with the pedal down at higher rpm.The rest of the time,it sounds like a diesel up front and a big block out back.I`m lucky to have the 4L80E.
