Anybody rebuilt there PS Gear Box?
Has anyone done this or can help with it? I bought a gear box at the junkyard the other day and I got a 3/4 ton one, so it's pretty much worthless to me. I figured instead of going and getting another one that I might rebuild the one I have. It leaks at the top of the gear box where the steering shaft goes in.
I know that the parts stores sell two different kits for them. Don't know which one I'd need for to fix my particular problem. One is the complete rebuild kit, another is the seal kit, and the last one is the Input seal Kit.

Re: Anybody rebuilt there PS Gear Box?
A seal kit, possibly just that seal. I have rebuilt one or two, just pay attention to how it comes apart (mostly the number of turn on the nut from the steering shaft, too tight and it won't turn too good!)

Re: Anybody rebuilt there PS Gear Box?
I would change just the seal needed. I've done the whole box before.. Took me 2 kits because I ruined one of the teflon rings going together. Keeping track of all the balls is a bugger too. Next time I'll just buy a rebuilt unit if the whole thing needs doing.
Doing just the input or output seals though, isnt too bad to do.

Re: Anybody rebuilt there PS Gear Box?
I've rebuilt mine...probably would not try it again. I would go reman. If you decide to do it, get the master kit and like chevymad said, be very careful with those teflon seals.

Re: Anybody rebuilt there PS Gear Box?
So would it be this seal that needs to be replaced?

Re: Anybody rebuilt there PS Gear Box?
The parts book lists the steering gears as the same for 10-30 series, so the 3/4 ton gear will work? After you remove the threaded plug and pitman shaft, take a piece of 3/8 fuel line or copper pipe and as you turn the flange the lower housing will move down and out, continue to push the hose into the center of the housing. Reverse the procedure to assemble. As long as you don't remove the hose or pipe the balls will stay in place.
Chevrolet and GMC published a Service Manual and an Overhaul Manual. Find and Buy the Overhaul Manual, its the best money you will spend, if you are doing the work yourself. |

Re: Anybody rebuilt there PS Gear Box?
The shaft is different on the one that I got from the junkyard. It came from a 79 Blazer. That's why I figured it was a 3/4 ton.

Re: Anybody rebuilt there PS Gear Box?
I went the parts store remanufactured route. Cost just over $200. It was tight at first, but after six months it started getting sloppy again. I question the quality of the remanufactured boxes.

Re: Anybody rebuilt there PS Gear Box?
I guess my question that I need to ask is which seal is it that I need to replace if it is leaking at the top of the gear box where the shaft connects?
Is it that Input Seal?

Re: Anybody rebuilt there PS Gear Box?
If you want to replace the seals only, the ones where the rag joint attaches to the steering shaft, I believe you will have to buy the complete kit. When you take the big nut off be sure to count the number of turns. You might want to scribe a line on the nut and the housing just to make sure you put it back in the same place. I replaced one recently, but I cannot remember if I purchased the complete kit or a shaft seal kit. There are 2 lip-type seals in that nut. assy. and an o-ring or two. Good luck! Tell us how it turned out.

Re: Anybody rebuilt there PS Gear Box?
On the used gear, my wrecking yard told me the the 10-30 2wd truck gear was the same until 76.

Re: Anybody rebuilt there PS Gear Box?
I think I bought mine from NAPA for $170. or was it $270. I thought it was worth the $ to not screw up my original box. I wish I could have gotten a different turn ratio particularly with my 8" rims.
