How to remove tint from '72 Door windows?

I never liked any window tinting on my trucks, and I am prep'ing my K-20 for paint.............Previous owner put some tinting on the door windows, It is really ratty and pealing off in places. Is their an easy way to remove this stuff? Other than peeling it off with a scrapper?

I can't remember the name (been a couple years) but walmart and Autozone sell some spray that help loosen it up so you can peel the tinti off. May still require some scraping, but it does work pretty well. maybe someone else will know the stuff I am talking about.

Don't know the stuff Bill refers to. I used a razor blade and soapy water. If you use the razor blade method be sure to keep it wet! Lots and lots of soapy water, windex, whatever you have handy that is wet and slippery! If not you'll scratch the crap out of the glass. Ask me how I know.

That is what I am worried about...............The glass is in great shape other wise, and from the looks of the windshield, they put new in when they re-did it the last time..........I was hoping someone made something that would lift it like a paint stripper, if you will, and you could easily scrape it off.

peel off all the film ... wet glue residue left on window with acetone ... soak shop towel with acetone ... rewet window with acetone ... rub like hell ... repeat until all glue residue is gone.

Flip your shop towel frequently or you will wind up smearing the glue that you just wiped off of window and on to the shop towel back on the window.

It takes a while, but this is how I used to do it. I tinted windows for a living many moons ago.

DO NOT USE A RAZOR BLADE ON YOUR GLASS !!! It's not a matter of MAYBE scratching your glass, it's a matter of how bad.

first just rip off all the tint. 3M sells an adhesive remover that seems to do the job. Also "The Works" cleaner worked in a previous instance for me as well. both of those are probably just acetone base. It does take a lot of time, and patience, but sooner or later all the glue will be gone.

Several years ago I removed the tint on my rear window , I used Axius Tint-Off . from the local auto parts store .

I used 409 and a scraper that holds a razor blade. Oh, yeah. This is the time that you get to cuss the P.O. too. Be sure his ears are burning the whole time you are dealing w/his mistake. I did. The blade shouldn't scratch the window if you keep it wet (drenched) with solvent. Acetone might damage paint , upolstry or anything else it comes in contact with, use it w/caution. Mine had two layers of some cheap ass auto parts store tint. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths people will go to save a few $$. If you do put any tint back on, be sure to use a tint shop quality tint. 3M, Lumar or something similar will not be difficult to remove if needed like the cheap (purple) stuff. And it does not turn purple like the cheap stuff. I know my truck looked ALOT better after removing the purple film from the windows.

The glue/adhesive that is on professional grade tint (3M, Lumar, etc) will not come off with Windex or like cleaners, but the glue on the cheap stuff from Wal-Mart, Auto Zone,etc will.

P.S. Hey Psycho ... I noticed your sig concerning the Slot Cars ... my local track closed down about a year ago and I am dying to run my stuff again. Got tons of parts, complete cars, (Champion, Parma, etc) motors, (16D's, Super16's) mostly flexi type stuff ... if you need something, let me know ... I may be able to help ya out & I can't use it anymore.

I actually haven't raced in a while. I mostly race wing cars in the Texas Series when I race. I also have no local track so when I race it involves a weekend of travel to a big race for Group12. Keep your stuff though. Those flexi classes don't suffer from advances in technology that the wing classes do. Another track will come to you eventually, and then you'll have to buy all new stuff. I considered selling all of my race stuff, but could never get the 2-3K that I've invested over the years. I've actually built my own rental track that is portable. It's and oval 8'x20' and has 8 lanes banked 10 degrees on one end and 20 degrees on the other. We are going to start making swap meets, car shows, Flea markets and such and see if I can eventually quit my day job. Hey, everyone has to have a dream right? Good to talk to someone who knows what nerfing means, lol.

The HO scale is much different than 1:24, like we race. I'm sure they are fun. But not nearly as fast or customizable (word?). Thanks for the info though.
