need tips on how to start a cold engine

i just got my 350 '71 yesterday and this morning i started it up but it wouldn't crank over right away. it took 6 or 7 turns of the crank before it finally turned over. its been about 15 years since ive started up a late model car and pretty much have forgotten how. should i pump the pedal a few times before cranking it or what. just wondering what your cold engine startup routine is.

maybe do a tune up points plugs condensor distrib cap and wires fuel and air filters set the gap on the plugs the dwell on the points and set the timing also checking for cracked and dryrotted hoses and beltsshould help in ease of starting and keep it running

its been engine swapped with a HEI system.

HEI you need to check that it's been wired properly and not still using the resistor wire

wheres the resister wire gonna be going to?

Each engine can have its own preferred method, and even that may change with the seasons.

In summer (or if the engine is warm), I turn the key and it starts. Cool mornings may require just enough throttle blip to set the choke, but no more. In colder weather, nearly a full stroke on the skinny pedal -- but only one, or it floods.

Basically, make sure you have a hot wire to the HEI.
