Brake Job cost

Hi all,

So I am in a rental, building a new place, so between houses, but my truck needs brakes all the way around. It is a 70 C-20 Custom Camper, with the rear that needs the whole thing pulled apart to do the brakes. Since all my tools are in storage and my new garage only exists in my mind I was wondering if anyone knew about what it would cost to have a shop do this. It would need new shoes all the way around, and rebuilt cylnders as well, since the bleeders are froze. Thanks in advance!

Re: Brake Job cost

Around here you would be looking at $109.95 each axle + $19.95 to bleed
+ $19.95 each wheel cylinder, so somewhere around $350 total, sorry

Red face Re: Brake Job cost

yup cost for parts 120.00..shoes and wheels cyls

new drums rear 180.00 each
front drums 90.00 each

master cyl 40.00

rear hub seals 40.00

labor 550.00

total 1350.00

i would go buy the 100.00 worth of tools if they even cost that much..
before i even thought about paying someone to do the brakes on one of the easiest brake jobs out there..

here in chicago...for what they would charge...the shop could close and go fishing for a week...

some how... some way.. do it your self

Re: Brake Job cost

You better see if all the parts are even avalible before you go taking it to a shop. I've seen shops replace what they can, charge an arm and a leg, tehn return it saying we were only able to do 1/2 of it... that'll be 700 bucks please.

I'd laugh at the guy that tried to sell me drums for that much. I did my rears 8 months ago and paid 40 bucks for both, brand new. This is the exact reason I bought a couple manuals and have been teaching myself to work on my truck. It's just so darn hard to find a reputable shop that does good work for a fair price anymore. It's a shame really.

Re: Brake Job cost

67fleet, yours is a 1/2 ton, the truck in question is a 3/4 ton, and there is a possability his drums haven't been made in 15+ years making 180 bucks a deal for new ones.

The problem with your $20 drums, is there is no hole for the adjuster, and there are no provisions for the anti-ring spring tht is supposed to be on there.

Re: Brake Job cost

The drums are so expensive because they only fit the 3/4 ton Eaton/GM 8 lug axles. Last time I checked ChevyDuty, i mean, "Classic Parts" had 'em for around $130.

EDIT: LonghornMan beat me to it.

Re: Brake Job cost

The OP only said it needed shoes and wheel cylinders, not drums/master cylinder etc.

Re: Brake Job cost

OK,
You guys are depressing me! I just went to check for the rear drums, and all I see is drums for a leaf sprung C-20, I have coils in the rear. Maybe I can get them turned, yea that's it! Anyway, you guys all assumed I needed new drums, not sure I do, but now I really really hope I don't. BTW, rear drum from AC Delco sprung rear is $143 from Rock Auto, so you were all pretty close on that.

Ahhh, this sucks....

Re: Brake Job cost

well, then I'll use another example... I was only able to locate 3 of the 4 brake cylinders for my longhorn. My parts guy spent almost a month tracking down the one I needed the most.

Re: Brake Job cost

If your drums don't have grooves... don't turn them. Make sure to tell whom ever is doing it, not to turn them onless absolutly needed. They can roughen it up with a die grinder and those little green 3M wheels.
By turning them, you'll be cutting off thousands of miles worth of drum. It gets pretty important when you can't locate new ones.
