1970 Chevy Analysis
Hello,
I just introduced myself on the welcome page (http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=204928) and have some questions for the group... 1) Has anyone dealt with Scott's Super Trucks out of Alberta? Just want to know if it is good place or bad place to shop! 2) The below truck is for sale there, I have attached some pics, it is a 1970, has a 455 Olds in it, and obvioulsy was someone's project for a while, not sure why the stopped. Do you guys think this looks like a good start for a young guy wanting to spend what little disposable income he has on a cool ride? 3) 455 Olds, good or bad? 4) What would an educated guess be for a fair value on this truck? Before you buy you need to check some things.First I suggest you get a soft refrigerator magnet(the bussiness card type) and check for bondo.Wear some old clothes so you can crawl under it and look at the cab mounts ,corners and the frame.Use the magnet on the paint in the rockers and above the windsheild.Also the cab corners.Tip the seat forward and look at the metal in the back parts of the cab and down the sides of the tank.Tap the doors with your finger and while you are looking under it don't forget to check the bedsides behind the rear wheels.The battery box and area under it including the wheelwell aand radiator support are prone to rusting.
Don't just use my suggestions use the search function and find out what other areas are prone to rust and check them.Bondo and shiny paint can cover up nightmare bodywork.I am not trying to discourage you because I think the truck looks sharp though I'm not a fan of "YELLER!!"I just think you need to be as well informed as possible about what to look for.There's nothing to sour someone on the old car/truck hobby like getting taken because they didn't know what to look for. Good luck and welcome to the most comprehensive manual for these trucks. I do hope you find the truck is as good as it looks and get it.Have fun!!!

This is fantastic, this is the kind of stuff I need to be told.. I am not to proud to have my hand held through something like this...
I was under it a bit yesterday, no pics though, I did notice that there was some bubbling on the passenger rocker as well the driver's rocker was all out rusting.. so that gave me mixed signals, on one hand they didn't try to hide that, so perhpas it is a good solid body, on the other hand, perhaps they did try to hide it and it just wouldn't stay away! Welcome from a fellow Canuck, that truck looks pretty good, I like the 455-should have buckets of torque,hard on gas I would suspect though.Price-wise I would have to say $5-6,000. As far as Scott's Super Trucks prices I would have to say he's pretty pricey. With the Canadian Dollar being higher now you're probably better off doing mail order out of the U.S. for parts. IMO, the 455 is an added bonus. And as far as MPG... it won't be much worse than a 350... if it is even worse at all. It'll suck getting hard engine parts thoguh, they are getting to be order only , like my big cad motor.
Take a good look at some of the stuff done, personally, some of that custom work can be used as barganing tools...even if you like the yellow grill and the seat covering, you can fake the funk and maybe get a few hundred knocked off. Welcome to the forums. It still looks like a fun ride... even if it has a funny lookin seat cover and a yellow grill.

Nice lookin truck for 3500. Best advice is take a magnet. Paint can and does cover everything nasty. Take a friend with you and have them follow behind you when you drive it to see if it dog tracks. Can ride nice but, if it's been hit, may be more of a pita than it worth.

i'd rather spend the money on an original paint bigblock truck so you really know what you're starting with//unknown milage 455olds==BIG$$$$$ to maintain// i also would look for something that has power steering and power disc brakes// big block with standard drum brakes ain't much fun/// www.rustfreeclassics.com has an original bigblock longhorn for only a few hundred more so i'm sure theres other comparable ones available that bright yellow macco paint aint worth alot

The biggest thing is to make sure its solid body and frame wise. Wish I knew that when I brought my truck. If I could do it over, I'd save up and get something original out of Texas or AZ.

Don't be dazled by the shiny paint. Look it over carfully! Does the mechanics of that engine swap look correct, or is it BS yokel. IMO, I would look for something with a sbc, very cheap & easy to get parts. FYI, if you'er ordering stuff from the USA. DO NOT ship UPS. They will rape you on extra charges.

The search continues, I phoned out there today and the guy on the phone DID NOT instill alot of confidence in me, or the truck... He doesn't know anything about, they simply bouht it off a guy that was getting divorced. When I asked if it would pass a safety inspection, he kinda grunted and told me he had no idea... thanks for all your help.. if anyone hears of a nice 67-72 kicking around central Alberta, let me know! I once owned a 1968 Olds 98 with a 455. It was a good engine and wasn't a gas hog. I seriously considered pulling the engine and installing it into my 1970 k20 but didn't due to time constraints.
