Windshield Frame?
I took the windshield out of the 70 so I could clean-up and prep the area for painting. I noticed a few holes in the passenger side upright post of the windshield frame. They were filled with windshield gasket goop. Are these supposed to be there? Before I weld them in I want to make sure I am not going to screw anything up by welding them in. I didn't notice any along the driver's side post so I wasn't sure. They don't look like rust holes, but they also look a bit to uneven to be planned.

Re: Windshield Frame?
They shouldn't be there. I had some like that on an elcamino and I used Evercoat metel to metal and it held good on clean metal. The correct way would be to weld.

Re: Windshield Frame?
Weld those up Bill. You may have more serious rot behind them though.
Also, I don't think we need to use any sealer on our windshield gaskets. They should install dry. Last edited by incoma; 07-16-2006 at 05:14 PM. |

Re: Windshield Frame?
Kind of what I thought. I am pretty sure that it is not the original windshield since it is tinted and it was a non AC truck and the tinted windshield wasn't on the option list. Whoever put it in used some serious sealant when they installed it. Metal is pretty solid around everything for a 36 year old farm truck.

Re: Windshield Frame?
Looks like the last owner did the ice pick trick looking for rust when he installed the last glass. They do not look bad, I would just use some RTV on them and pop in the new window. If you try and weld then up you may find real thin metal from rust and just blow right on thru. Also by welding you will end up with exposed weld on the inside where you can not get to it to seal it up after and that will just cause more rust as well. The last windshield we took out looked great before the glass was removed but after that we found tons of rust and damage so we went one step further!

Re: Windshield Frame?
Thank you Kevin. I'll keep that in mind. I am going to look at it closer as I clean it up for paint.
