How to add HEI dizzy?
I tried to look in the FAQ section and either I am an idiot or I just could not pull up anything. I just bought a new baby, 72 cheyenne swb fleet and want to get it running a little better. Any help would be greatly appreciated and what year engines can I pull the distributor from. Thanks in advance.

Re: How to add HEI dizzy?
Don't forget to run a new wire, or replace the original yellow wire. The original is a resistor wire and will only provide 9 volts.

Re: How to add HEI dizzy?
Glock, a little more info please. I am KING at bodywork but the mechanical I usually leave to someone else. I want to see how cheap I can build this daily driver for myself and make it look really good. Where is the "yellow" wire located?, or how do I run a new wire and what do i attach it too. Sorry, stupid here.

Re: How to add HEI dizzy?
If you don't want to be as anal as me and replace the wire, you could run a wire from the HEI to the spot on the fuse block named "Ign". Basically, you just need an ignition-on circuit to power it up.
The links above are great. Also, check the FAQ section for a great color wire schematic.

Re: How to add HEI dizzy?
turn motor to tdc
line up dizzy to about #1 put dizzy into motor when fully seated it should be pointing at #1 on the cap you could mark the dizzy where #1 is remove old coil cut and terminate the yellow coil wire from coil and at the starter or you could remove it entirely from the harness run a new wire from the ignition unfused to the dizzy when you get a hei dizzy , get the plug that goes to it for power and use it in your new wireing , you could also run a 30 amp inline fuse in your new power wire plug it in and start it up i would do a tune up at this point i like to run truck plugs gapped at 45 part number 4025 and plug wires from a 79 or so truck fit perfect if you have headers , and if you have stock exhaust manifolds you can run wires from a 75 camaro i believe this is alll info i learned here . hope this helps tom

Re: How to add HEI dizzy?
pull the coil wire off both the coil and cap.,throw it as far as you can pull the number one plug...first one on the drivers side front..
have someone click it over till you start to fell and hear pressure, while looking at the tdc timing mark on the balancer.. line both marks up.. repeat this step if needed till you get it right.. now your on top dead center number #1 cyl now remove the dizzy cap.. rotor should be pointed at that same plug you pulled in step two.. notice the vacuum advance location for reference later.. now remove the y clamp that holds the dizzy in.. pull the old dizzy out slowly.. now hold just as it was before you pulled it, look at the very bottom where the oily gear is on the bottom., you will see a little bar across the bottom.. this engages into your oil pump rod...note this position.. now get your new HEI dizzy in hand..install new rotor..rotate till that little bar at the bottom looked like the old dizzy..rotor should be very close to the same position as well.. install your new dizzy gasket..the old one might be stuck on the block if you did not notice it before.. install your new dizzy...you may have to wiggle it a little..to engage that little cross bar into the oil pump rod as noted before..make sure it's fulley seated...reinstall your y clamp.. install you new cap and rotor..rotoe should have already been installed so you find the rotor pointing at #1 cyl position.. install new plugs gapped at 45 install new HEI wires... install your new 12 volt power wire..needs full 12 volts the old yellow wire won't work.. set timing to 8-10 degrease before TDC..your all set.. happy motoring...your pal mark Last edited by rage'nrat638; 07-16-2006 at 02:21 PM. |
