vin identification

Hey guys. I have two cabs here. one off of my doner truck and one off of the really nice cab i bought. The junker vin is CGE142A138293. this first two characters look like c's, but according to my info there isnt an option for a c in the 2nd digit. this is off of the door jam. can anyone figure out what year it is? According to the sheet i have the third character should be a number. so its messing me up. and the nice cab number is: CS3481138102 on the door jam. I think this one derives to a 1968? maybe. its so confusing. If anyone can decipher these to so I can tell people what year truck im building that would be great. I dont have a title or reg. for either one. Thanks guys

Re: vin identification

The year is still fetchable using the VIN decoder from the front page of this website:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/Chevyear.html

The year is typically the fifth digit, but in your case, the G is pushing it one over (I forget the significance of that G, is it Canadian or fleet or something? I Forget)

7 = 1967
8 = 1968
9 = 1969
0 = 1970
1 = 1971
2 = 1972

In your case, you have a '72 cab (junker) and then a 68 cab (keeper)

Re: vin identification

That should be CCE
In 72,GM added a C in the front of the VIN on Chevys, and a T on GMC trucks.
CGE142A138293
So your mystery cab is;
2 wheeldrive
V8
1/2 ton
Cab and bed
72
Built in Atlanta
Was the 38293rd one down atlanta's assembly line for that model year.

Re: vin identification

CGE142A138293

Thats a 72 1/2 ton Van body vin 8 cyl built in Atlanta.

CS3481138102

Thats a 1 ton 6 cyl 1968.....I'd say longhorn cause of the box identified in the vin by using the number 4 and it's made in Oshawa, Canada plant.

Re: vin identification

Yep....makes me wonder about original factory rivets being there or not.

regardless its a 72 vin still be it van or truck. Could be someone stamped wrong letter.
