69 C30 ??auto tranny/no park??

I've got a 1969 C30 dually with the original 292 six and an automatic. My question is what kind of tranny is the auto. It's just like a th350 minus one thing. There's NO PARK. as in never was. ??? no park on the column indicator, or tranny, only goes to reverse, and there's a little parking break off to the left of the column on the dash, lever style. I'm assuming the park break is an aftermarket or dealer add on because there is a foot e-brake in the floor. Anyone have any clues?

Re: 69 C30 ??auto tranny/no park??

I have the same thing with my 69 GMC 1 ton (used to be a motorhome) What you have is a turbo 400 with probably the 14k frame. For some reason GM thought the trans would be overloaded with the parking pawl. (It forced you to use the parking brake and keep it maintained). I needed to rebuild the trans anyways, so I picked up (got lucky) an HD cased trans out of an 82. The steering column is different, does not have the detent in the tube to move the lever far enough to catch park. I swapped in a tilt.

That isa some what common feature in bigger trucks. I know of a 69 GMC Longhorn here in Ohio like that.

Do you have a picture of that secondary parking brake?I had the same deal on my`70 CustomCamper/30 dual wheel. The TH400 is no different from others and the pawl can just be added and either change the column(that`s easy and you have "P" on the indicator that way)or modify the column by altering the detent and swapping the indicator.
